you tripped into my life on the first day of fall,
when the leaves matched your hair
and i found every excuse to see you at the coffee shop.
you were there every day from 7:30 to 8:15
and i found myself waking up a little bit earlier every time
just to see you elegantly sip what looked a lot like hot chocolate.
of course, you noticed.
you told the barista to write notes on my cups.
'wear your purple scarf more often'
'the light blue sky of morning matches your eyes'
i played along with your game,
leaving napkins with my loopy handwriting
tucked under your chair.
'the green sweater suits you best'
'your smile is bright like the sun'
'do you believe in love at first sight?'
the next day you wore the green sweater and a big smile
as you gripped my coffee in shaky hands
and placed yourself in the other side of my booth near the window.
i remember you pushed thick rims of your glasses up your nose.
then you carefully scribbled on my latte.
my name is shane and i ship us
because love at first sight does exist.
with a blinding smile and a burst of audacity,
i sat down next to you and spoke the first words of our blooming relationship.
"my name is annabelle and i ship us too."
so it was decided,
then and there,
that for the boy with autumn colored hair and the girl with the sky in her eyes,
the little coffee shop
on the busy street of a big city,
was where a latte and a crumpled napkin in the fall
meant hope, audacity, promise
and maybe,
the beginning of something real.
