Seraphina tried to sleep, but it was hard. After leaving the two boys and going up to her room, she found it too quiet. It was as if her room was soundproof.
Shaking the covers off she sat with her legs on the side of the bed. Thinking maybe that a glass of water or milk or something would help, she left her room and descended down into the kitchen, and had just taken a glass out of the cabinet when she noticed she wasn't alone. Turning slowly she realized that she had interrupted Charles and Raven arguing over something. Her mouth formed an o.
"I, uh, was just getting, um," Seraphina glanced at her drink. "Milk. I'll be going." she finished awkwardly. Charles shook his head, giving Raven a look, whom Seraphina noticed she was now in her natural form without clothes.
"It's fine. I had just finished speaking." He brushed past her and she could hear his footsteps going up.
"You don't mind?"
Raven's voice tugged her eyes back to the young woman. Seraphina softened her gaze. "Not at all. Somehow, the lack of clothes works for you. In a non-perverted way, of course."
Raven smiled at her. "Charles didn't agree, that's why I ask."
"On your fashion choice, or who's behind the choice?" Raven looked down. "Erik gave out some friendly advice, yes?" Raven nodded. Seraphina set the glass down and put a hand on Raven's shoulder.
"He's somewhat one sided, you must see this. Erik stands firm in his beliefs, and right now, I'm not sure where they are leading him. I was very close with him, but currently I think that bond is losing with our different views." Raven's demeanor hardened a little unexpectedly. Seraphina hand was shrugged away, and she wasn't sure what she had said wrong.
"You expect the humans to accept us?"
"Raven, what? I-"
"Never mind. You sound too much like Charles." Raven practically hissed. Seraphina sighed, running a hand through her hair. That's not how she wanted that to go.
Nothing works out as we want it, dearie.
Seraphina turned around so fast her neck hurt, and she dropped her glass. She could hear blood pumping in her ears, but didn't notice the sound the glass made when it shattered, because right on the counter was the rope figure from before. Only it wasn't rope.
The figure was now composed of glass shards, mimicking the mess she had made. At least she knew it wasn't her imagination anymore, this thing was real.
Ahhhh, it's lovely to manifest again. Glass isn't my favorite, but it works.
"Wha-what are you?" Her voice shook, betraying her fear.
Nothing you need to know. But maybe you want help right now? A little extra so that you can, say, convince Erik to accept humanity?
"What do you care? Erik does what he wants, it's none of my business."
But you see, it'd still be his own free will, just with a nudge in your direction.
"I'll do that on my own, thank you." she stood up straighter, with a little more confidence. The glass being in front of her swung it's legs, and made noises that must have been laughter.
All of a sudden it stopped, and seemed to look behind her before flashing out of existence.Seraphina turned around again at top speed to see Charles standing there with his hand on the door frame.
"You saw that, yes?" She asked him quickly. Charles continued to stare at her. "Charles, please! I'm not mental, something was there, please say you saw it!"
This seemed to spark some response out of him. "I'm not...sure. I saw...crystals? Then they went away, vanished.."
Charles would have said more, since Seraphina appeared very distressed over the matter, but he found himself in a tight hug which caused him to catch his breath and open and close his mouth like a fish.
"You've no idea how relieved I am you saw it." Seraphina mumbled, releasing her hold on him. "I guess we should sleep now, yes?"
Charles was still in a state of confusion and shock after she had long retired to her room.
~*~
The morning of their fateful mission, all sat silently around the kitchen table munching on stale cereal.
"Where's Hank?" Raven asked at last, acknowledging what we all noticed.
"Maybe he's sleeping?" Alex suggested.
As one, we all got up and went upstairs only to find he was not there. It was like we were lost puppies, waiting for our owner, mostly because Hank was the only one who knew how to operate the plane.
"Lab, then." Darwin said in the silence of our thoughts.
Like before, however, we did not have much success. The only clue as to where Hank might be is a note saying he was where the plane was, and to bring the crate marked 'x', with us. The real kicker was that it may be one of the only objects in his lab that was still intact.
"Whoa, what happened here?" Sean whistled a low note, striding into the room and weaving through all the wreckage and debris.
"I found the box." Charles called out, his accent ringing sweetly in Seraphina's ears. Since their, understanding of sorts, she had noticed more of the little things about him. How intensely blue his eyes were, but so soft at the same time. How soft his hair looked...
"Hank has been busy." Seraphina shook her head lightly to get rid of the thoughts and focus on the mission. She noted Erik's sarcastic tone, nudged him, then realized why.
In the crate were blue and yellow suits of the ugliest design, waiting to be worn.
"Do we really have to wear these?" Darwin complained. Alex gave a wobbly smile that said he wasn't too keen either.
Charles looked up with an amused expression.
"As none of us are mutated to endure extreme G-force or being riddled with bullets, I suggest we suit up." he quipped.
