Moving to a new town always seems to give people a clean slate, a fresh start. Though it was a forced decision, and I didn't have much of say when it came to moving to this small town, this was my opportunity to start over.
After my mother died, I had no choice but to move in with the only other guardian I had left. Unfortunately that meant moving away from the only haven I've ever known as well as my pack. I felt as though I was walking in blindsided to this new town, with no security whatsoever. I didn't know what to expect, and though I was terrified on the inside I wanted to remain strong on the outside.
That's how I was raised: don't let people think you are weak because then they'll have an advantage on you, be strong and brave.
I took another deep sigh as I looked at my reflection up and down in the mirror. Today was my first day at Beacon Hills High, and though I'm starting the school year the same day as everyone else, I already knew that I would still be the new girl who didn't know where her first period class was.
I pulled over my denim jacket and then smoothed out my black loose fitted dress. I didn't necessarily want to stand out with my outfit, but I also didn't want to fit in. I already knew that my confused looks around the school would be enough for me to stick out like a sore thumb.
"Elaine, school starts in fifteen minutes and I don't want you late for your first day." My uncle James bellowed from the bottom of the stairs.
"Coming down now," I yelled back throwing my backpack over my shoulder.
Now or never, I thought to myself as I followed my uncle out of the house with an apple in my hand.
The school was only about a half a mile away from my new house. I insisted on walking, but my uncle refused and I think I know why. My mom used to drive me to school, and after her death my uncle wanted to make sure nothing else in my life has changed, even though everything has.
"You excited?" He asked trying to make conversation.
"Um, I guess," I shrugged looking out the window.
"You look nice for the first day." He commented on my outfit.
"Thank you." I said as we pulled up in front of the school. "I think you forgot to mention how huge this school was."
"Oh, you'll be fine. You are a Barnes, after all," He smiled as he pulled over and put the car in park to look over at me. "Alright you got everything? Schedule? Lunch? Textbooks?" He inquired frantically.
"Yes," I faintly laughed nodding my head.
"Call me if there are any problems," he kissed my cheek, "You'll be fine."
I took another deep breath trying to calm my anxiety. My heart was beating a mile a minute as I nodded my head.
"I know."
I got out of the car and rolled my shoulders back, trying to muster up as much confidence I had in my tiny body. I was told when I was younger, if you look like you have confidence, people will think you have confidence. I was still working on that however.
Here goes nothing. I pushed the doors to the school open and my eyes widen as to what's in front of me: kids rushing around loudly and laughing as if they're having the time of their lives.
It was high school, why are they all so excited to be here at 8 am, I asked myself.
I made my way through the hall, trying to dodge people walking by as I scrambled to find my locker.
The next thing I knew was I collided with another student knocking both his and my textbooks to the ground.
"Shit," I mumbled as I bent down to help, "I'm sorry."
How cliche, I thought to myself cringing internally as I rushed to pick up my books that were sprawled out on the ground.
"Don't worry about it," he said sincerely as he handed me my schedule.
I give him a small smile, taking the papers from him.
"You're new aren't you?" He asked, the corners of his lips forming into a smile.
"What gave it away?" I chuckled awkwardly.
"Well you seemed a little...lost." He informed me, trying to sound as polite as possible.
"Yeah I just moved here a few days ago," I explained, "I'm Elaine."
"I'm Scott, do you need any help with finding where to go or anything..." he trailed off.
"Oh yeah, actually could you help me find my locker? This school is bigger than I anticipated." I showed him the post it note with the locker number on it.
"No problem, follow me."
I walk down a few halls with him as we make small talk.
"So where were you from before you moved to Beacon Hills?" He asked.
"Ashland." I told him and he simply responded with a confused look on his face. That's the typical reaction I get when I mention my old town. "It's a small town in Oregon, I'm not surprised if you haven't heard of it- no one has." I reassured him.
He nodded his head a few times as he looked up at the lockers.
"Alright, here you are." He said pointing to locker 208.
"Thank you," I smiled and proceeded to complete the combination.
"Let me know if you need anymore help today. And welcome to Beacon Hills." He smiled and then walked away.
I took a breathe of relief that I didn't realize I was holding in. As soon as I collided with him, I caught his scent. He was a werewolf, and a powerful one at that. But the question that was truly on my mind was did he catch mine?
"Who's the hot girl?"
I perked my ears up as my body stiffened. I turned my head slightly so I could get a view of who was speaking about me.
"She just moved here a few days ago. Her name is Elaine."
"Did you make a move?"
"Can we give her a few days to settle in before she has two hormonal teens jump at her?"
"Well if either of you don't, then I will."
I smirked to myself as I decided to have a little fun with this. I slammed my locker shut, and turned my heel to walk toward them.
I immediately made eye contact with the tallest one in the group who wore a scarf around his neck and winked discretely as I walked past.
"Dude she just winked at me!"
