"The stock market is based on two principles. What are they?" The teacher in front of me began, who I now know likes to be called Coach.
"Yes McCall, you can use the bathroom. Anyone else? New girl, what do you think?"
Just like I know what Coach likes to be called, he likes to call me new girl. The feelings aren't mutual however.
I dug my head in my hands in embarrassment and let out a low groan.
"Uh, no coach...I know the answer." Scott continued.
Coach bursts into an uncontrollable laughter. Was it humorous for him for students to know the answer? I didn't understand this school.
"Oh." His face fell, "You're serious."
"Yeah...risk and reward."
Coach's face lit up in astonishment as he made his way towards Scott's desk, "Wow! Who are you? And what have you done to McCall?" Coach asked, "Don't answer that. I like you better. Does anyone have a quarter?" He inquired continuing the topic of class looking around the classroom, "A quarter?"
"Yep." Stiles said, who sat beside me, as he dug through his pockets.
His hand comes out with the quarter in between his fingers, but with that an extra large condom.
My jaw drops as I watched the package fly through the air and land on the ground.
A few giggles erupt in the room, but apart from that everyone is dead silent.
Coach bends down to pick up the blue package, "Stilinski, I think you, uh...you dropped this." Coach hands it back to a red Stiles, "And, congratulations."
As Coach walks back to the front of the room, I look over at Stiles who immediately looks back at me, his face red and full of embarrassment. I give him the thumbs up while he merely scowls at me for my sarcastic behavior.
"Okay, watch Coach." He said catching my attention once again. He then bounces the quarter off of the ground and straight into the "Coach Rules" mug.
We all applaud him, as he straightens back up looking rather proud of himself.
"Okay, Danny. Risk, reward." Coach tosses the quarter at Danny.
"What's the reward?" He asked.
"You don't have to take the pop quiz tomorrow." Coach tells him.
"Coach, it's not a pop quiz if you tell us about it." Danny tells him in a know-it-all tone of voice.
Coach snatches the quarter back, looking rather disappointed at Danny, "Danny, you know, I really expect more from you at this point. Really."
Coach's eyes gaze around the classroom, while I try to stay unnoticed.
"New girl!" He exclaimed and I honestly should've seen this coming. "Risk, reward."
"Hm?" I sat up straighter.
"Risk, reward. What's it going to be?"
I hesitantly reach for the quarter. "Reward is that I don't have to take the quiz tomorrow?" I answered, though it sounded more like a question.
"That's right," he nods, "Now get up here."
My eyebrows rose with shock as I pointed to myself to make sure he was referring to me.
"Yes, come up!"
I stood with my head held high trying to show off confidence even though my anxiety was killing me on the inside.
The first step to having confidence is faking it, the words repeated in my head.
I got into the same position that Coach was once in before. My eyes were locked on the mug as I took another deep breath. I tossed the quarter praying that it would land in the mug. Much to my dismay, I misjudged the distance and it falls about two feet further than the mug.
"That's alright new girl, not everyone can score a goal. We always need people on the cross country team, try outs are tomorrow." Coach patted me on the back in an encouraging matter, but it just felt degrading.
I fell back into my seat, feeling slightly more humiliated than before. When I looked up I met Scott's soft gaze, who just smiled at me. I returned the smile and then quickly looked away to watch Stiles attempt the same thing I had just done.
The door to the classroom opens up and a Sheriff steps in with two deputies behind him.
"Stiles."
"Yeah, Coach, I got it." Stiles absentmindedly replied still paying attention to the mug in front of him.
"Stiles." The sheriff said once again.
When Stiles looked up, his face paled as he stares at the Sheriff before him waving him to come out of the classroom. I notice as Scott watches them with curiosity and concern as they leave the room.
There's something about this town that just puts me off. Something doesn't feel right. And I am determined to find out what.
