I was the first one to walk into my first period English class, so I got the first pick for seats.

I slumped down in my chair and aimlessly scrolled through my phone as the rest of the class slowly began to file in. I tried to stay as unnoticeable as possible.

"Yes! Dude, hot new girl is in our English class."

I remained still, not wanting to make it seem like I could hear them. I tried to hide the smirk on my face.

Uncle James- How's the first day going? Did you make any friends yet?

I rolled my eyes and just as I was about to reply I got a new message from an unknown number.

"The offing was barred by a black ban of clouds and the tranquil waterway, leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed somber under an overcast sky, seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness." A woman read as she walked into the classroom. It was the same exact lines that the text message said.

I furrowed my eyebrows at the woman, who I assumed was our teacher. If this was her way of relating to her students, then she was obviously trying too hard.

"This is the last line to the first book we are going to read. It is also the last text you will receive in my class. Phones off, everyone."

I quickly replied to my uncle's message to lesson the worry that he must have.

"Ms. Barnes," I heard my name and immediately froze. "I know you are new this year, but the rules still apply to you."

"Sorry," I muttered throwing my phone into my bag and slumping further down in my seat to avoid everyone's eyes.

This was not how I intended to start my first day.

The class period went by slowly as I tried to stay awake doing a reading assignment.

"Mr. McCall?" Ms. Blake called out from the front of the room.

I immediately lifted my head as I watched Scott grab his bag skeptically and walk toward Ms. Blake.

"Uh, I'm sure it's an emergency if your mother needs you to leave school, but I'm going to give you a warning in the nicest way possible. I am well aware of your attendance record. I don't want to see you slip back into old habits."

"I wont. It's going to be different this year."

"Resolutions are only good if you stick with them, Scott."

"I will. I promise it won't be ephemeral."

I felt nosy for listening in on every conversation that was happening around me today, but being the new girl I did it for my own reassurance, to make sure people weren't talking about me.

"Prada? Your dog?"

"No Stiles...my designer handbag bit me. Yes of course my dog."

I smiled softly to myself at the girl's witty comeback.

"She's never bitten you before, right?"

"No she's never done anything like this before."

"Okay, what if it's the same thing as the deer? You know, like how animals start acting weird right before an earthquake or something?"

"Meaning what? There's gonna be an earthquake?" The girl questioned the same thought that I had on my mind.
