Mark and Jack had been friends for years, nearly their whole lives.

They'd met in elementary school when Jack and his family moved to America from Ireland. They were almost instantly friends.

They'd kept their closeness of being best friends all the way through junior high and into high school.

About halfway through their second year of high school, however, they didn't talk as much. Jack began to become more popular and Mark had stayed in his own friend group.

Eventually, Mark and Jack stopped talking altogether during their senior year, losing their friendship.

Mark's parents were still close to Jack's parents, though, so they decided to have a get together between the two groups.

Mark and Jack were expected to be there as well.

Jack dreaded going there, as he had developed feelings for Mark which he was unwilling to admit. That's why he had been avoiding Mark.

Finally, the time came. Jack's parents drove to Mark's house and were there in minutes.

Jack panicked, not wanting to see Mark.

They were greeted by Mark's parents at the door, "It's so nice to see you all! Hi, Jack. It's been a while since we saw you!" Mark's mother said.

Then she hugged Jack.

When Jack and Mark were still friends, Jack had been rather close to Mark's parents, especially his mother.

"It's nice to see you, too, Mrs. Fischbach," Jack said after the hug ended. He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.

"Come on in," Mark's father said with a smile, letting the group of three inside.

They were led into the dining room where Mark was nowhere to be seen.

"Mark's up in his room," Mark's mom said, "I'll go get him, unless you want to join him playing video games, Jack, at least until dinner's ready."

Jack said nothing, but Mark's mother assumed that he wanted to join Mark.

She led him up to Mark's room and knocked on the door, "Mark?" she called.

"Yeah, mom?" He asked in return, his voice just as audibly pleasing as before.

"Jack's here to see you," She said.

Mark's steps were heard to open the door, "Hey, Jack."

"Hi," Jack said, taking in Mark's appearance.

"So... you wanna play video games?" Mark asked.

"Yeah, sure," Jack breathed out.

Mark's mother smiled and left the two alone.

"How's it going?" Mark asked.

"Pretty good," Jack said, sighing.

"I like your hair like that," Mark commented, talking about the green dye and the much different hair in general, "Back when I dyed my hair pink, I guess we just happened to do it around the same time, crazy coincidence."

"Yeah..." Jack said, "I like the red, though. It suits you."

"Thanks," Mark said, wearing a small smile, then it quickly faded, "So, we haven't talked in forever."

"Yeah, it's been a while," Jack replied, hesitating in the slightest to prepare for what he said next, "I... I'm sorry."

Mark sighed, "I understand why we stopped talking, though... I mean, sometimes friends don't stay friends, and that's fine..."
