I sat down begrudgingly on my usual spot in the school cafeteria with files upon files secured at the crook my arm.
"Still haven't found her?" Kristen asked as she sipped her vanilla milkshake.
I shook my head in frustration but kept on glancing through my folders. I need to find her now. Like right now. Other wise, I may lose this bet and become Ryder's slave. Who knows what horrendous things he'll make me do? I'm not even going to try to imagine it. I need to win this!
"Here," Carter said offering me a wafffles slathered in nutella and sprinkled with Kit Kats. "You might pass out at the rate you're going."
I took the waffle and bit it hungrily but continued to work.
"So, how was the date with Alex?" Kristen asked.
"... Fine..." Was my reply as I tried to look calm and untense.
"Hm... Fine, you say?" Kristen said suspiciously. The girl can smell lies from a mile away like a bloodhound. "Then how come I didn't get an update and Alex's relationship status hasn't changed to 'In a Relationship with Megan O'Connor' and he still remains single?"
"Because there's nothing to update you on and Alex hasn't asked me to be his girlfriend." I replied smoothly. Nice one, Megan. Pat on the back for you!
Kristen doesn't stop regarding me strangely. Instead, she keeps staring, as though any moment from now, I'd break down and tell her the truth.
I refrained from rolling my eyes. Like I'd tell her anything.
She keeps staring and staring and staring until finally she glances away and says a small, "Fine."
I sighed, finally letting the resolution crumble. "The date never happened."
Kristen's entire face perked up and she forced to me to continue my trail of thought.
"The date never happened because Alex cancelled on me." I continued.
There was a small moment of silence, almost like a calm before the storm when suddenly, like the crack of thunder and the whip of lightning, Kristen screamed.
"What?! How dare he cancel on my best friend?!" She exploded.
I ducked my head as people's gazes stayed at us.
"What are you twats looking at?!" Kristen exploded. "Take a goddamn picture, why don't you?!"
I shushed her and continued to explain. "He may have cancelled on me but I did receive a lot of free expensive things and that's always a good thing."
"He better have a good reason to cancel." Kristen replied darkly.
"Chill, babe." Carter said, placing a warm hand on Kristen's shoulder. I could see her visibly relax at the contact and I couldn't stop my heart from melting. Carter and Kristen is probably the best match I've ever made.
"He didn't tell me," I shrugged. "He just said that he had to cancel and hanged up on me."
"How are you so... so... Okay about this?!" Kristen screamed.
I fought back another sigh and said, "Look. I've never been stood up before, okay? I haven't gone on a date since Freshman Year. I'm not exactly fluent in the dating language."
"How is that possible? You're Megan fucking O'Conner. You're the best machmaker in all of New York! How are you not fluent in the dating language?!" Kristen asked.
I opened my mouth, ready for my reply when I felt a presence beside me.
"Hey there," Ryder's voice said.
