A Birthday & A letter

"Apparently it's someone's birthday today, I'm not sure though. Do you know whose birthday it is?" I sarcastically asked Tabitha. She giggled and rolled her eyes.
"Funny." She replied with the enthusiasm of a wet sock. I smirked and handed her a card and a present. Her eyes widened as she grabbed them.
"You didn't have to buy me anything."
"Oh well. I wanted to. I hope you like it." She ripped off the wrapping paper which revealed a smallish grey box. She looked up at me with confusion, then back down at the box.
"What you do is you open the lid and then take out the contents of the box." I was in such a sarcastic mood that morning.
She laughed and opened the box and took out what was in it. She held a silver diamanté skull ornament she told me about seeing a few days prior. She gaped and put down the skull and box onto the floor and pulled me into a hug.
"You remembered me saying about it!" She said, her voice full of happiness. We pulled away.
"Yeah, I do listen sometimes." I smirked and she rolled her eyes, before putting her present into her locker.

**********

A whole school day had past, and it was fucking slow. I was glad to get back home and put my feet up. When I walked through the door, I was bombarded with a cold and silent atmosphere. Dan and Phil obviously hadn't been home for a few hours. I chucked my bag on the floor before turning up the heat before I got hypothermia. I wandered into the kitchen to make myself a coffee. While I was in there, I saw some letters on the breakfast island. Being the nosy person I am, I picked them up and looked through them.

Dan... Dan... Phil... Dan again... Wait, Dil?

Someone sent me a letter? I looked at it with slight confusion for a moment, before tearing open the envelope. I unfolded the letter and read it:

Dear Dil,
We found out two years ago that you had been adopted by a gay couple. We hope you're doing well. We saw you on some videos on YouTube with your dads and you seem very happy and healthy.

For the last few years we have been feeling guilty. Very guilty for that matter. We left when your mother was going through a terrible time and we weren't there to support you after she died. You may've heard of stories about us not treating your mother right but we've took a step back and realised how terrible we've acted over the years. We put ourselves before our own daughter and grandson, and we feel absolutely ashamed with ourselves.

Now, this may not work, if it does, that's great, however if not, we can say we've tried. We want to meet you, as we haven't seen you since 2015. 7 long years without seeing you. We would like to get in touch with you again and try and re-build the burnt bridges. If you accept, write back and we will go from there.

Again, we are ashamed with our past behaviours and we want to make this right. We want a clean slate. At the end of the day it's all up to you, but please, think about it. It would be lovely to see you again.

Yours sincerely,
Nan and Grandad.

What? Why did my grandparents suddenly pop up out of the blue and send me a letter?

Why did they suddenly want to know me again?
