Chapter 8

In Westlake, Texas, Alex was at a local diner, and serving lunch to the customers.  Thanks to Denise, she got her the job here.  It wasn’t great, but they did need the help, and Alex liked the change from papers in a folder, to a paper that you write orders down.

It was a rough three months.  Denise and Alex talked on the phone for days while the boys were singing on stage, and Denise and Paul helped her get a moving van to bring her stuff down from New York to Texas, and then an apartment a mile away from their home.  Alex had a hard time, but she had to sell some of her things because she didn’t need a whole lot in her smaller apartment, but she was fine with it.  This time there wasn’t a fireplace, but her picture was in her front room behind the couch.

She kept out of the spotlight ever since she moved, and just called Denise mostly or just writing just for her brothers.

Denise called Alex last week saying that the boys finally found out what happened, and she had to explain to them.  Alex wondered how long it was going to take to tell them.

            “Alex,” Sonya called out.

“Yes,” Alex said and looked over at her new friend.

“Could you take care of the counter for me for a bit?” she asked.

            “Sure.”

“Should be five minutes tops,” she said.

“That’s fine.  Go, it’s a slow morning today, so go.”

“I’ll hurry back,” Sonya said and stepped away for a few.

Alex was checking the tables, turned to make some more coffee, and filled up some water pitchers.  She heard the bell on the door letting her know that someone walked in.  “Welcome to Dixie’s, go ahead and find yourself a table or at the counter, I’ll be with you in a second.”

“Alex, could I have my check please?” a customer asked.

Alex smiled to see one of their favorite customers waving at her.  David was a sweet old man that comes in every day to order the same thing for breakfast, and sometimes comes back to have dinner too.

“Of course David, give me a second here, and I’ll get it for you,” Alex said.

“Take your time.  I’m not going anywhere sweetheart,” he flirted with her.

Alex smiled as she thumbed through her slips, and goes over to David at the end of the bar, and hands it to him.  “There you go sugar,” she said with smile.
