Prologue:
Hunger, death and fear. Those were the things that controlled my puphood. My mother was old and had only enough strength to bear her litter of six before she gave in and rested forever. A young she wolf took us in after she lost her own pups. The famine took two of my sisters and as winter came, my brother also gave in to a cold death. Three of us remained with the she-wolf. One black, one gray and one white.
Soon as our first year came the she-wolf lashed out at me before she left us to fend for ourselves. The gray was the oldest and the strongest of us, he was called Thunder. My sister took the name of Snow because of her fur. I was called Shadow because of my stealth abilities and was the runt of the litter.
After many unsuccessful attempts of hunting as individuals, we learnt to work together and found we had better luck. Finding game became harder as our second winter crawled over the land. All the deer migrated south and smaller creatures burrowed deep to hibernate. Soon our little pack would have to head south as well, following the deer.
It soon began to snow and food became scarce. We were forced to travel south to warmer regions. We crossed into the territories of rival packs and were chased over many kilometers. Some of the packs would watch us from the safety of the trees. After three suns we found a small area that hadn't been marked for a very long time, the bones of a male wolf in a cave proved this.
Not far from the cave there was a small river and large trees lined the banks. This place became a home for me at least for the time being and I would make the best of it while I lived her.
