The sun began to sink behind the horizon just as I came back along the river to the den. Snow waited lazily at the cave entrance and didn't bother lifting her head to acknowledge my presence but I knew she had caught my scent on the wind. "Thunder hasn't returned yea Runt, you should go find him" she said boredly. I growled at her but wandered off following my brothers scent. I distasted my sister calling me runt and ordering me around, but there is a reason why I gave her the nickname 'Snow the Bloody', not even a wolverine could compete with her ferocity.
I traced the scent to our borders and waited for a while to see if my brother would return. After long minutes nothing in the woods moved. It was a big risk to go out of our territory once the sunset. Slowly I inched out of my safe haven and kept to the shadows as much as I could. The scent lead into the border of a rival pack. My brother could be a fool but he wasn't stupid enough to go into neighbouring pack territory, could he? I watch for any wolves guarding the perimeter before I warily tracked the scent into their territory.
I was glad this was one of the less well guarded packs and not the western pack. Thunder seemed to have been following a she-wolf possibly a yearling like us, it was hard to tell. Deeper and deeper the tracks led into the heart of the forest where the pack den was. It was nerve racking being so far in a pack's territory and be standing still. It was a pack of five wolves, the elder wolves where away from the younger ones.
They all were focused on something on the opposite side of the clearing, but what ever it was block from my view. My foolish brothers scent led straight through the clearing. Instead of following it I weaved in and around the trees, silently, staying in the shadows the shielded me from view. when I finally got a look of what had caught the packs attention. I stood stock still. Thunder was standing there with a tawny she-wolf by his side.
I instinctively crouched low and bared my fangs, but I dared not make a sound incase I alerted the pack. I felt the wind begin to change and moved away quickly so they wouldn't catch my scent. My sister would be furious if she heard of this. slowly I moved out of the pack's territory and back into my own borders. Next time I see my brother I might have to fight him and that is not something that I look forward to, but he could try to hide it or maybe allow us to stay in that pack with him. Only time will tell what is to be.
I cautiously approached my sister and tormenter. Since we were pups she had always been vicious but my brother put her in her place only because he was older and stronger. sometimes on the clod plains we would run into other lone yearlings and Snow would instantly attack them. I felt sorry for them, when Snow was finished they would be so torn up they were unrecognisable and didn't in the slightest look like a wolf. She lifted her head staring me down, challenging me, I knew better then to accept the invitation, but I was stronger then I was months ago.
"Don't keep me waiting where is he?" she snarled, spittle flew everywhere. I pushed back the hatred I felt for her and simply spoke looking into her eyes "with the rival pack". She growled menacingly at me as she rose. Her ears flattened on her head and her lips pulled back to show deadly white teeth. I snarled back at her, but gave in, I would settle this later. My sister seemed to agree softening her stance slightly, "We will wait for his return" she said just to make it seem like she was in charge. she was fooling no one but herself. I simply ignored her and made my way to the river.
I stared down at the rippling shape of my reflection. The water always moved, never staying still. Maybe this was how a wolf should be, continually moving, going where they wanted to go. Unbound. It was a clear night and the stars shined in the water. I look up at the sky and wondered what it would be like to fly like the ducks and geese that I have often devoured.
My contemplating was shattered by the scents that hit my nose. I slid back into the cover of some bushes, I could take Thunder by surprise if he chose to fight Snow. I watched as he approached Snow, the tawny she-wolf still by to his side. He snarled at Snow who submitted to him. His actions where only to show his dominance over her. I slinked towards them quietly. the wolf at Thunder's side growled when she caught my scent. This was going to be interesting.
