Adrian's POV
"Did you say anything to her?" Kyle asks me.
"No, I didn't say anything. For these past two weeks, I've only done what she wants and I haven't even pushed her to tell me why she's so upset," I answer, frustrated as I don't know why Kate isn't answering my calls or texts.
Kate has been really distant these past two weeks. At first, I didn't want to ask her if she wanted to go out anywhere because she seemed so off, but Emily told me to ask her because there was no harm in doing so. So when I asked her if she wanted to go and watch a film with me at the cinema and she agreed, I was surprised. I guess she wanted an excuse to forget about whatever was on her mind. We had a great time that night and we went out somewhere almost every day after that.
Then, just four days back, she seemed really jumpy and to lighten her mood a bit, I played a prank on her.
We were at the park and she seemed to be looking around every second as if she was scared that someone was going to jump her or something. I told her that I was going to get some ice cream for us and that I would be back soon. She said ok and went to sit on the swing while she waited.
I stayed away from her for a couple of minutes, waiting for the right moment to go behind her and scare her. When I did, she was furious and didn't fail to make me feel guilty after telling me countless times that I almost gave her a heart attack. I would've taken it as a normal saying, but the seriousness in her voice told me that she did actually almost have a heart attack.
She said she was going home and to not stop her before she walked off. Whether I did the right thing by not following her, I didn't know. So I played it safe and texted her later that day saying that I was sorry. She replied a few minutes later saying that it was fine and that she was sorry for being so moody.
We talked on the balcony for a few minutes before she went to bed saying she was tired. I asked if she was ok and she said "I'm fine". I believed her then, but now coming to think of it, was she really fine? Is she mad at me because I didn't realise that she wasn't actually fine? God, I am such an idiot!
"Actually, I might've done something wrong. About four days ago, I played a harmless prank on her and she took it the wrong way. I apologised soon after and she seemed to have forgiven me right way. I asked her if she was ok and she said that she was fine and then went to bed. Do you think she's not actually forgiven me?"
"Adrian man, you're an idiot. The No.1 code to girls is that if they say 'I'm fine', they're not actually fine. She's obviously been ignoring you these past few days because you didn't give her the time of day," Kyle tells me.
"Fuck sake. Now how do I find out if she's mad at me!" I cuss in frustration.
"I have an idea. Girls always tell their girlfriends everything, right? I'll just ask Emily."
"Yeah, do that. Actually, do you know what, I'll talk to her. I'll sort my own shit out myself," I say, taking my own phone out and dialling Emily's number.
After a couple of rings, she answers and I begin to tell her everything that's happened.
"Has she told you anything?" I finally ask.
She audibly sucks in a breath and lets it out in one loud, long blow.
"They haven't told you yet, have they?" she asks, sounding weak and helpless.
"What? Who hasn't told me what?" I ask, staring at Kyle to see if he knows anything.
'Put it on speaker,' he mouths to me and so I do.
