Thunder roars and lightning flashes outside my window and wakes me up in the middle of the night. I climb out of bed and walk to the window. I watch as lightning strikes the ground every few seconds and rain is a constant being. This is the worst storm my home has ever gotten.
I start to get worried as the lightning strikes get closer and closer to our shaky, wooden house. I've always taken this home for granted but I wouldn't be happy if it went down in flames now. Especially with my sister, mother, and me in it.
The storm has been going on for almost a day now and has started to cause a flood. The flood is small at the moment, only half an inch, but it still scares me.
I turn my head as my door opens with a creak. Light illuminates in and the shadow of my eleven year old sister, Alison, stands in the doorway. "Hey Ali.Storm wake you?"I ask waving for her to come in. She nods and walks in.
She's in her pink pajama pants and shirt and her silky brown hair is in a ponytail. "I can't sleep. The storm is too loud."She says with a shrug. I nod and give her a reassuring smile.
Our mother bursts into the room looking frantic and scared. "Girls get to the car.The storms gotten bad.We don't have time to pack.Just go hurry."She says bustling us towards my door. I do as she asks but I start to worry. Why can't we take anything?
We follow our mother to the front door all in pajamas and no shoes. Once outside the rain dribbles down my face and soaks us the first step out the door. Ali runs to the car but I stay with my mom as she locks the door to the house.
"Mom?What's going on?The storm doesn't seem too bad does it?"I ask her with my arms wrapped around myself. She shakes her head and says "You don't understand Jayla. And I wouldn't expect you too.Just know that whatever happens I love both you and your sister. Now get in the car."
I tilt my head and furrow my brows. "Mom?Aren't you coming to the car with me?Tell me what's going on."I say with my voice cracking. "I love you Jayla."She says and then takes off, running away from our house.
"Mom!"I cry out but she doesn't turn around. She disappears into the tall grass where I can't see her. I don't know what to do. I'm frozen in place while my sister waits in the car. I swallow the lump in my throat and start to move again but then the storm get's crazy.
Lightning strikes every second and just when I think it stopped it comes again. A flash above me makes me look up and it's like slow motion. A bolt of lightning comes traveling down right towards me but even in slow motion I can't move out of the way. Instead the lightning strikes me.
