I walked the familiar path to Agent Anderson's office. Now that I changed into my normal clothes and wiped my face of the remaning makeup I felt slightly better.
As I entered the elevator my finger automatically pressed the button that leads to the fifteenth floor. As I waited for the elevator to reach it's destination I could hear the faint monotone melody playing over the speakers in the elevator. I wondered why elevators always played that boring melody, it only makes those awkward moments, when you 're in an elevator with a random person, even more awkward. Why don't they just play some good pop songs or something then everyone could sing along together, thus destoying the awkward moments. Then again it would be pretty uncomfortable to have the tone deaf person next to you sing at the top of his lungs.......
I heard the familiar ding of the elevator, indicating that the elevator has reached it's destination, interupting my train of thoughts.
As the door opened I stepped into the bright hallway leading to my boss's office.
As I reached the big wooden doors at the end of the hallway I didn't hesitate to push them open, normally I would have the decency to knock before I entered. But Agent Anderson had alot of explaining to do. He never pulled someone out of the field, and when I say never, I mean Never. Except maybe when it was a life or death situasion, and even then it had to be a special occasion
So I was pretty curious as to why I was the one picked for this oh so special occasion.
As I stepped into my boss's office, I could see the beautiful site of the city out of the windows that made the walls to my boss's office. I could see the streetlights ligthing up the city, like it was something out of a fairy tale. In the background I could see the London Eye as well as the top of Big Ben looming over the city. According to the old clock it was about 00:30 in the morning.
I wondered why my boss would want to see me at this hour.
Agent Anderson's chair turned to face me and I looked at the face of the person who looked out for me so many times in the past four years. He wasn't really that old I'd say thirty five at the most, yet I could see small white hairs finding their way through his dark hair. I suppose a great deal of it has to do with the stress he has to endure every day. And I kind of feel guilty, because I think I'm the cause of most of his stress, since I am probably not the easiest person to work with.
As I looked at his face I could all to easily see that he is exhausted and probably had a long day of work, because of the bags under his eyes.
"Good evening Agent Mclean, or should I say good morning?" he chuckled at his own little joke, but I was not amused. And I guess the look on my face told him enough, because his face suddenly turned serious.
"Enough with the formalities Harold, I need to know why I am here! !!" I knew he hated it when I called him by his first name, but he needed to know I was serious.
"Yes, yes I was getting to that. "
"Right, I called you here because I have another assignment for you. " he said.
"And this couldn't wat till morning because..?"
"Well first of all it is because I am not here, I will be at a video conference with China all day, and secondly it is because you won't be here. " he replied.
"And where exactly will I be if not here? ?" I asked not liking where this conversation is going.
"You will be on a plane on your way to Avalon, a small town in Calafornia. "
"Wait! Calafornia, as in America?! " I asked truly shocked.
"That is correct, your mission will be to make sure the daughter of. .."
"No!!" I said cutting him off.
"Excuse me??" he asked.
"No! " I repeated.
"I'm not going Anderson, you know how I feel about going. You know how I feel about going to that place. "
"Send me to Russia, Madagascar, hell you can send me to Afghanistan, just please don't send me there!!"I pleaded, I even considdered going on my knees.
"Look Rowan I know and I understand what you're going through, I have lost alot of people dear to me too, but you have to learn to get over these things, I understand that this is hard for you but try to see this as your firts step to recovery. "
I nodded not trusting my mouth to agree.
"Good girl, now you mission is her..." he said holding up a picture of a girl who looked about my age, she had blond hair and dark chocolate brown eyes, she was pretty, but on the picture her smile was shy, "Laurel Calaway, her father got involved with the mob, and ows them money. His daughter is unaware of his doings, so it is your job to be there and protect her and make sure the mob doesn't try to kidnap her for ransom or something like that. Understood? "
"Alright so when do we leave?" I asked.
"We??" He asked looking truly confused.
"Yes, Aaron and I. " I replied as if it was all known knowledge.
He gave me a sad smile and said: " I'm afraid it's only going to be you on this mission Mclean , Agent Mathews won't be joining you on this mission, you see he has another assignment."
I didn't know what to do, Aaron and I are always together on missions, this would be my first solo mission.
"And how long do I have to be on this mission since I am not the one controling the timing or anything. "
"Honestly I am not sure but if i had to guess I would say from a couple of months to maybe more than a year. " he repied as it was no big deal.
"A Year?!" I almost yelled, "What will I be doing for the next year, besides watch a girl, I could die of boredom". I said frustrasion creaping into my voice.
With a slightly amused smile he said : " Well you will live like a normal teenager, go to school, do homework, maybe get a boyfriend, I don't know, as long as you keep Laurel safe, you always said you wanted a normal life, now here is your chance. " he said.
"What is so important about this girl anyway that I get pulled out of a mission for her?" I asked.
"Well you see her father was in the Naval forces and he is also my step brother. " he said looking slightly conserned.
I nodded.
When I did not respond further he said : "Your plane leaves in two hours, you should go see Tanya, she has all your gear, and bags already as wel as everything else you'll need."
I nodded and turned to exit his office when he said : " Oh and Mclean. Good luck and please keep her safe. "
I nodded again and exited his office.
