Ridge scratched his jaw. 'Nothing at all?'

'You know I'm not an exhibitionist.'"

- "'Are you?' Fern smiled at Sardelle. 'That's wonderful. Ridge, when you're done rescuing people and using my cottage for a safe house, make sure to discuss babies with her.'

Ridge grimaced. 'Mom, you should have had more kids if you wanted to guarantee grandchildren.'

'I tried, but your father was so seldom here. I would have had to tie him to the bed while wearing lingerie made of ancient maps to convince him to engage in local mountain climbing expeditions.'"

- "'I apologize for being forward, dear, but is it too soon to ask if you're thinking of marrying my son?'"

- "'So, should I not start glowing and throbbing obnoxiously?' Jaxi asked.

'Please don't.'

'I won't if he doesn't.'"

- "'She wants grandchildren. Didn't you see all of the cats. If I brought home a fertile baboon, Mom would be lobbying for babies. She had all but given up on me.' Ridge paused. 'That was perhaps not tactful. My mother would find you far superior to a baboon.'

'Is it hard to believe that it was your charisma that originally drew me to you?'

'Nah, I was surrounded by horny soldiers and hornier inmates at the time. They probably made me look good. I just have to hope you never find any men who are truly charming.'"

- "'Sardelle asked me to check in on you. I'll let her know that you're cozied up under a bed with Tolemek. She may find that disturbing.'

'She'd only find it disturbing if we were getting cozy in the bed.'"

- "'You'll catch me if I fall, right Jaxi?'

'I don't know. I was amused by that image of you tumbling to a heap at the queen's feet.'"

- "'You asked for a distraction. They're distracted.'

'Do any of them have eyebrows left?'

'They don't need eyebrows to stand guard and shoot people.'"

- "'It would mean I had an incredibly adventurous ancestor who had been brave enough to get randy with a dragon. You know my dad's dad and my three uncles were all drunks? Every one of them got himself killed doing something stupid. That's the kind of blood I have in my veins.'

'The blood of stupidity?' Tolemek squinted over at him. 'That seems apt.'"

- "'Maybe they're concerned that Phelistoth is going to fly over here and sex up all the young virgins.'"

- "'What is it?' she breathed, though she wanted to tell him to return his mouth to what it had been doing.

'It's just that I'd forgotten that we're in my mom's bed.' His face crinkled, and he whispered, 'What is she and my dad... I mean they probably don't because they're old, but...'

'Sardelle could have laughed at his expression, but she was too busy running her hands over his warm skin and trying to pull him lower again. 'Old? Ridgewalker Zirkander, I promise I'm still going to want you between my legs even when we're their age. Much as I want you right now.'

'So you think they do still do it?' He looked dubiously at the quilt."

- "'I'm also confused as to how it's not acceptable to have sex in one's mother's bed but having sex elsewhere in her bedroom is perfectly fine.'"

- "'I can't believe in that in your hundreds of years of existence, you've never made a man pee before.'"

- "'I'd hug you if you weren't aiming a gun at my chest,' Angulus said.

Ridge hastily lowered the weapon and snapped up a salute. 'It's just as well, Sire. I think there may be a rule about soldiers hugging kings. Impropriety and all.'

'I think that's only if the soldier is doing the hugging.'

'Oh? If I were a king, I wouldn't mind hugs, especially from female soldiers.'"

- "'You're canoodling in front of the kind, in case you didn't realize.'"

- "'My liege,' she said and dropped to one knee, her head bowed as she held out the towels. So much for Sardelle's guess on genuflecting. 'Please accept the use of my modest bathing facilities before you return to the city.'

'Is your mother telling me that I smell, Zirkander?' Angulus asked.

'I believe so, Sire. Politely.'"

- "'I wouldn't have guessed I could get you to be polite to him just by touching your shoulder, 'Sardelle thought.

'You're serene; you make me want to be serne. Or at least less of an irritable jackass.'"

- "That first shaman she had met in this time period had offered to breed with her to make powerful babies. She still shuddered at the thought.

'I'm guessing this woman won't make you that offer.' After a second, Jaxi added, 'She might make it to Ridge. To make powerful pilot babies.'

'Thanks. That's exactly what I want to think about now.'"
