Teetering on the edge of sleep, Aleida was annoyed when the rest of the pack returned, with heavy footsteps and low warning growls. It was always much more difficult to sleep when they were around.

A heavy head laid across her lap. Peeking, the wolf was easily distinguishable as Paul. She lifted her hand slowly, pain shot through her as she placed it on top of his head. The boy let out a faint whimper at her pain. None of the pack enjoyed seeing her like this, she was considered family. It was worse knowing she hurt herself to help them.

Sam shifted quickly on his return. "What were you thinking?" he scolded her softly. "I thought we asked you to stay back."

Aleida sighed, wincing at the pain it caused her. "I have lived in the trees for a very long time Sam," she breathed. "It pains me to be away for long."

He the shook his head at her. "You could've waited for one of us to return."

"Your heavy feet disturb the nature of things," she teases. "You're either too fat or too loud for a stealthy wolf."

Behind her, Aleida felt Embry try to stifle a laugh. The pack took comfort in her joking nature.

On the other side of the creek, Alice stiffened. She wasn't sure of what was going to happen, but she was scared it wasn't going to be good.

The rest of the family returned. All wearing a variation of expressions.

Rosalie and Emmett were clearly upset. The facial expressions showing their anger at the redheaded vampires escape.

Esme and Carlisle appeared to be more worried than anything. Esme was overwhelmed with the instinct to care for Aleida. Carlisle was surprised to see her there. He had met some of her kind a very long time ago and had reason to believe that there were none left. He had seen what damage untrained abilities could cause and was surprised she hadn't killed herself. His compassionate nature drawing the doctor in him to bring her back to health.

Carlisle approached the border with raised hands, showing he was of no threat.

"Sam," his voice was reassuring, welcoming.

"Dr. Cullen." The alpha wolfs voice was clipped, but polite none the less. He knew that Aleida would scold him for a lack of manners. "I give you permission to cross into our territory."

The pack let out warning growls.

The vampires tensed, and moved into protective stances as their leader jumped over and the border.

"Enough," Aleida's voice was weak but held her familiar authoritative tone. "You will behave yourselves. He is showing a kindness to you."

The vampires watched in shock as a few of the wolves let out small whines and lay on their bellies. They had no clue what this girl had done to receive such actions from the what they viewed as dangerous wolves.

Emmett watched on in confusion at the small girl commanded and scolded the pack of shifters. How they hovered around her in her weak state. The closeness of the wolves had him on edge, like he shouldn't let them be so close to her.

Emmett was aware of Jasper watching him strangely, his emoticons not making all that sense to him.

The immortal stood at the border, and breathed in a breath. Wet dog, and the scents of his family was expected. Wet soil and trees was what he got next, a scent that was oddly comforting to him. Lastly, their was a scent that made no sense to him, he figured it belonged to the girl. It was strong, making his throat burn and heart ache. It was nature, flowers and soil. It was the smell of the forest after in rained or it freshly snowed. It was everything that reminded him of the earth during winter, spring, summer and fall.

He absolutely loved the scent.

Aleida was wary of the vampire, but the color of his eyes reassured her that he wasn't a threat.

His family on the other side were quick to become defensive but Aleida refused to look at them. She could still feel the tug on her heart, it was stronger now than before.

She wasn't stupid, she had a pretty good idea on what it meant but she didn't acknowledge it.

"I'm Carlisle," the vampire before her greets. He was pale, paler than she was normally use to. He had blond hair and a gentle smile. He didn't scare her, she held his gaze.

"Many greetings," she told him respectively. It amused her slightly as his eyes widened slightly in recognition.

"It's a pleasure to be in the presence of an ancient one," his voice was quiet.

"I would normally have a blessing to give you, but I was never thought how to greet your species." Aleida couldn't remember the last time she was in a situation like this. Her reply to him was sheepish and without formality.

"It's fine," Carlisle spoke honestly. "I'm honored you trust me with your health."

"It's the least I could offer," she joked. The pack around her relaxed slightly knowing the vampire wasn't a threat to her.

"Let's take a look, shall we?" Carlisle took a cautious step forward and the wolves growled on instinct, earning a look from Aleida. He was quick with his work, assessing her before gently placing a hand on her ribs. She gasped and whimpered in pain.

An abrupt snarl made Aleida jump. Turning her head quickly she saw the big bear of a vampire heaving and shuddering near the treaty line, his teeth showing as he snarled at the wolves and his leader. He was still wet and it made it easier for her to see the muscles that rippled under his clothes.

She knew all the legends, and she knew all the stories. She had seen it happen just before her eyes, yet it was different when it happened to you. It was a strange feeling, a feeling that consumed her. Looking into his eyes, she felt the earth shift, him being the center. She could see the connection being formed, feel the tug on her heart pull one last time as a thin silver thread reached and connected her to him.

She was the only one to see it, but the vampires seemed to understand what was happening. Looks of disbelief and wonder on their faces, her soulmates angry shuddering stopping as he realized who she was to him.

"Enough!" Her voice was strong. "You have no right to snarl like some inexperienced pup." She would not stand for disrespect.

Paul lifted his head and gave a low growl t the boy. It seemed to click for Aleida on who this boy was.

"You were the one who tried to cross the border?" Anger was clear in her voice. "You are lucky I don't rip you limb from limb bloodsucker."

Aleida looked at him with clear disgust. Soulmates were sacred to her people in the same way the imprint was sacred to the wolf, but that didn't mean she couldn't ignore it or push it away. Her values took a higher place than the bond.

"I thank you for your help Carlisle, but I'm sure I'll be fine." Her voice was clipped, her anger still lingering. "Sam, I'm sure Emily is worrying by now. The other elders will want to hear of what happened tonight with the hunt as well."

Sam nodded at her underlying command. He was the leader, but he knew when to listen to another's words. He saw Carlisle to his side of the treaty before rounding up the boys.

"Embry, Paul," her words were gentle and reassuring. Embry lifted her quickly onto Paul's back before shifting. Leah lingered around the trees, wanting to ensure her friends safety. "I am starving. Do you think Emily will make me those cinnamon things again?"

The boys snorted as she rambled on, sticking close together to make sure she was well supported.

Aleida looked back a last time to see the pained look on her soulmates face, defeat written clear in his body language. She shook her head softly before facing the front and relaxing into soft wolf fur.
