*Early November, 1966*
It was the most typical of days. Hayden Ray Joshua woke up and put on a t-shirt and jeans, grabbed her bag and stuffed her books in it, and went into her her brother's room to say goodbye, since she wouldn't be back for a few hours.
"Bye, Topher. I'll be back by tonight." Hayden kissed her brother's forehead and he softly mumbled a 'bye' before she left.
Hayden turned 22 in November 1965, and Topher shared her birthday. She was 5 when he was born. Her mother died hours after he was born and her dad died shortly after from distress. He got so depressed that he jumped off a cliff, and Hayden was left to take care of her newborn brother. They had a caretaker until Hayden turned 15, and was able to take care of Topher. She missed their caretaker, for she was always so kind to them. She left to go work across seas as a nurse in a time of distress, and Hayden lived with Topher in a house in the woods, where nobody knew existed. For legal documents, she put the address of her aunt's house.
They never lived with their aunt. Why? She wanted to be mature and do things herself, even though she still had a little sibling to take care of. She managed to work it out, and still lived through it all.
As she jumped off the railing to the staircase on the porch, she grabbed her knife that was always kept under a branch that never left. She never kept it in the house because it was a way to pick the lock if she didn't have the key. Most times that she didn't have a key, Topher had one and she forgot it, or lost it somewhere, only to find it the next day.
She tucked the knife in the waistband of her jeans and pulled her jacket down to hide it. She pushed her bag further up her shoulders and ran a hand through her red hair, making her way through the trees in the forest, and past the rock cut walls that hid the big house.
Hayden had a job at the hospital in the tea room (restaurant and gift shop) and a job at the high school Topher went to as a counselor. It was summer, and nothing was going on at the school except for renovations and preparing for next year. Topher would be a senior and would go to college the next year with the money their parents left for their education. Hayden just graduated 2 months ago from college with a bachelors in nursing and a masters in counselling education.
As she got into town, the normal people said hello and the older men tipped their hats, reading he newspaper. The women kindly greeted her and she returned all of the greetings with another greeting or a nod and a smile. She finally made it to the library and took her books out to return.
"Good morning Hayden? Come to return your books?" Mr. Llewellyn, the kind librarian, asked Hayden as she came in.
"I did!" She said cheerfully. She was always happy to see Mr. Llewellyn. He was so nice and very funny, and never ceased to make her smile. He wasn't bad looking, either, for a man in his thirties. He had tousled dark brown hair and bright blue eyes, and a smile that made everybody feel good about themselves. Despite his looks, he was also very sweet to everybody and always seemed to smile at everybody.
"Did you finish them all?"
"Are you kidding me? I couldn't even stop reading. Gone With The Wind was so amazing! I had to read it twice and watch the movie!" She said, smiling widely.
"Love, you've already borrowed this 6 times!" He laughed. "Why don't you just keep it? No charge."
"No, Mr. Llewellyn, I shouldn't."
"I insist, dear. It's yours."
"Oh, thank you, Mr. Llewellyn! Thank you so much!" She hugged the young guy tightly, and he returned the hug. She left, clutching Gone With The Wind to her chest as more people greeted her this lovely Saturday morning in Liverpool. Mr. Davis, the baker, called her name and she didn't even look up as he threw a freshly baked roll to her. She caught it and took a bite without laying eyes upon it or Mr. Davis.
"Thank you!" She called, smiling. He tipped his hat towards her as she sat at the fountain. She opened the book and started reading again from page one, despite knowing the whole story. She heard a bunch of girls screaming, and looked up. Ah, the usual, she thought.
Daniel Unmisig, the cute guy in town, stepped out of his muscle car, and made his way through the girls. Hayden thought he was somewhat cute, but his personality was shit. He was a cocky bastard who thought he was so great. Even worse, he was in love- no, obsessed- with Hayden.
Groaning, she got up and started to walk away until a hand grabbed her wrist.
"Where are you going, my love? It's much too nice out for you to go back home. Wanna go out?"
"I'm going somewhere that isn't around you, yes it was very nice out until you ruined it, and hell to the fucking no. Why, you might ask? Because I have a life and you're not in it." Hayden spoke to him coldly, for this happened every day. On days it was gloomy outside it went like this:
"Hayden, where are you going?" Daniel asked from across The Hub. "It's too rainy and gloomy for you to being going out alone. Why don't you stay in here and sit with me?"
"I'm going to the hospital, yes it is rainy and gloomy, and no. I'd rather rot in hell than get close to you."
Hayden always found a way to burn him, and it was new each day. Whether it was a good burn or not, everybody snickered at her and laughed at Daniel. He was always red faced when she left and absolutely pissed off.
She yanked her wrist away from Daniel's hold, walking away from him. Today he wasn't letting her get away. It had gone on long enough.
"Hayden Joshua..." He said, harshly grabbing her wrist again and pulling her against him.
"What the fuck do you want?" She asked, pushing away from him. "I want you to go out with me. And I think you should focus more on life than reading stupid books."
"Firstly, Unmisig," Hayden said, putting emphasis on his last name because she knew he hated being called Unmisig. "I do focus on life. I help save them every day at the hospital and I guide lives every day being a counselor. And secondly, books give me comfort from your bullshit I fucking put up with every day. Now, get out of my way and stop touching me or I will call rape."
He didn't let go, and Hayden was about to scream it before he finally let go.
"That's what I thought." She shoved him away from her and he huffed. The entire square was watching and everyone was laughing except for his friends, who looked almost as angry as him. They had been trying to help Daniel get Hayden, doing anything they can. After careful thinking, they came to the conclusion that she was just too strong willed for somebody like him.
Hayden walked the entire way to the hospital, as usual. She was starting as an official RN today, and would shadow for the most part, meaning she would watch the older, experiences nurses and take notes. She took off deep breath, and went inside.

The day went by extremely quickly. It was almost 8 o'clock when Hayden got out of the hospital. She walked out the doors and jumped when a hand caught her wrist again.
"How do you manage to work long hours like this and still take care of a house and a baby at home?"
"Topher's not a baby. He's 17 fucking years old. And I don't know how I manage it. How do you manage being such a dick all the time? And sucking them in the process?"
Daniel fumed. "You know I'm not queer."
"Why am I your cover?"
"What?"
"I'm your cover for being queer. It's obvious, Daniel. Why don't you just leave me the fuck alone for once?" It was true, he was a pretty boy. All the girls loved him, but some of the boys did too. He had a reputation for taking it where he can get it, and he always flirted with Hayden as if it were his cover.
"I can't leave you alone because you're too beautiful to be working all the time. Marry me, and you'll never have to work again."
"No thank you. I can make my own money without your whining." She yanked her wrist away yet again and put a knee to his gut. He crumpled over as she quickly got away from him.
"You will pay, Joshua," Daniel seethed. "And so will your baby brother."
