If was deadly silent. The whole room was deadly silent, save the quiet beeping of the heart monitor and the soft hush of the oxygen being pumped into his lungs. Tears ran from Hayden's face.
How could he possibly do this? Doesn't he have any sense at all?
She held his limp hand. This was basically the picture for the past 4 days. No way in hell was she bringing Ada in when he looked like this. They were feeding him food through a tube but his ribs still looked like handles that somebody could grip.
She ran her hand over them and stopped at his stomach. She hung her head and let a quiet whimper escape her lips.
"Don't leave... not now, not ever... please come back... please..."
Suddenly George shook and his eyes shot open. Hayden jerked back as he stared now at the ceiling.
"Hayden..." He mumbled. He was unaware that she was sitting right next to him. She touched his hand and his eyes traveled over, his free hand taking the oxygen mask off his face. He looked at her and noticed her dull eyes with bags under them, and her face just displayed a look of sadness.
"You're here," George whispered.
"Of course I'm here. Why wouldn't I be?"
"Y-you left... with Ada."
"You knew I'd come back. I left because you really hurt me and I wasn't taking that anymore. You promised..." her voice broke and George reached up to put a cold hand on her cheek.
"I know I promised. And I know how much I ruined everything for us. If you don't want to be my wife anymore I understand."
"What? No! That's not what I was saying at all! George, listen... I'll always want to be your wife and I always will be your wife. I would never divorce you if it was the only way to save my life. But if you're gonna keep up this thing where you get mad at one little thing... which was a lie, I told you... then I can't live with you anymore. If I have to leave, I'm leaving. But I would never really leave you."
George closed his eyes and thought about her words. She was right. The last thing he wanted was for her to leave and the last thing she wanted to do was really leave. She held his hand tighter and looked down.
"Just don't go," George whispered.
"I won't. But if you hit me or Ada, I'm gone. And then I really won't know when I'll be back."
"No, please, Hayden, you know I can't control it."
"George, you have a daughter who is just barely over 4 months old! You have to learn."
He sighed. Again, she was right. If he hurt Ada he might as well just die.
"I need your help. Please."
"I will. Just don't get her involved at all."
"I won't, I won't... I promise." She put her head down next to his and peeked down at his stomach. His ribs still showed. It was sickening to Hayden. Her hand traveled down his chest, even more bony than before, and to his ribs. She shuddered.
"I'm okay now," George whispered. He knew exactly what she was thinking.
"How could you..."
"Hayden, listen..." He grabbed her face and forced her eyes to his. "I'm fine. You can't worry about me anymore. The only thing I needed was you."
"You know why I wasn't there. Because I'm still having a hard time forgiving you."
"I know, I know... it's not your fault, and I never said it was. But please, if it ever happens again, just hit me."
"No, no, George, I'm not hitting you. But if you hurt Ada directly, I'm leaving and I'm never coming back. Because you've hurt me enough and I've always forgiven you. But I'm not hitting you. Do you understand what I'm saying."
George nodded frantically. Hayden dipped her head and kissed him sweetly. When she pulled away, George lightly licked his lips.
"Are you feeling better at all?"
"Much better now that you're here." Hayden smiled at him and some body knocked on the door. Paul came in seconds later and looked at the two of them.
"Um, this is really awkward, but Hayden, something happened to Topher."
~
Hayden read over the letter again while she was in the car with Paul on the way to the airport. She had stopped by Friar Park and thrown some random clothes into a bag, and Paul left with her to go to the airport. The flight from London to Annapolis was 2 hours direct flight.
Apparently, during training, Topher's plane had a malfunction and he crashed.
"I can't believe I left George..."
"Hayden, don't worry about him right now. John's staying with him and he said he wanted to see Ada at some point, so Cyn's going to bring her in. I'm going with you to Annapolis."
"What? No! He'll freak! And I'll be fine."
"Hayden, stop fooling yourself. And we talked it over. He said it's okay, and that he and I are okay now. Did you ever hear?"
Hayden furrowed her brows. "Hear what?"
"I was hammered the night I called him. Jane had somehow found me and drugged my drink, and she kept ordering me more. You have to know that that wasn't really me. I don't remember it myself. John told me everything."
Hayden sat back. He could easily be lying, but she knew the tone of his voice at this point. He was dead serious.
"I'm so sorry, Paul."
"No, don't you apologize. It's my fault. I just hope you don't hate me."
She sighed and put her hand on his knee reassuringly. "I couldn't hate you Paul. But I swear to God, if you try to come onto me..."
"No, I'm not and I won't. That was really fucking stupid of me that time and it was just that you looked extra pretty that day. I almost couldn't help it but I'm really sorry."
"It's fine, Paul. Just so long as it doesn't happen again."
They arrived at Heathrow and Hayden's worry returned. They went in and got tickets to the first flight to Annapolis, which departed in half an hour.
Hayden and Paul sat at the gate together until they boarded, and there was a 3 hour flight ahead of them.
(AN it's probably not that long from London to Maryland but idgaf I do what I want remember this isn't even real.)
Hayden was asleep on Paul's shoulder when they landed. He woke her up by lightly tapping her nose, which made her eyes flutter open.
"We landed. The base is only 10 minutes from here and the hospital is 5. Let's go." He pulled you up from your seat and you both took your single bag and left the plane, almost running out of the airport and getting a car to the hospital. Hayden knew one of Topher's friends, Alex, who went to the Navy with him and he arranged for a car to pick them up and he was going to wait for them at the hospital for any news.
They arrived at the hospital and Hayden found Alex right away, giving him a hug.
"What's going on? What happened?"
"He crashed. We have no idea what's going on right now, only that a doctor came out asking for you," Alex replied. Paul stayed behind while the two went back to the doctor, and the doctor led Hayden from there. He led her to a secluded area and wondered how serious it was.
He opened a pale colored door and let Hayden in, before shutting it behind her.
She looked at the bed and gasped.
Wires.
Tubes.
Needles.
Everywhere.
His legs were casted up to just above his knees, his left arm was casted and held up with a support. His head was wrapped in tight bandages and bleeding through, his left eye was wrapped over. Everything was just a mess, and Hayden's hands shook the slightest bit.
"Topher?" She whispered.
She saw his fingers curl from the cast, and his right eye slowly opened.
"Hayden," he said with a hoarse voice. Hayden let out a deep breath, knowing that he could at least speak and knew who she was.
"What happened?" She asked shakily.
"I- I crashed. I lost control." Hayden sat down on the right side of him, and too his free hand in her own. He turned to her and smiled, his lips cut.
"Don't leave, Topher."
"I'm not going anywhere, Hayden. I just need time."
He closed his eyes and she held his hand up to her face. She heart the heart monitor beeping and turned the sound on it down.
"Hayden, I'm sorry..."
"No, what are you saying?"
"I'm saying... I'm sorry..." He said in a strained whisper. He gently let go of her hand and pointed a finger out, then lightly jabbed it at her heart.
"No," she whispered.
"I'll be seeing you, Hayden." He held onto her hand again, as if his life depended on it. Quite literally, it did.
She finally sighed, realizing how much pain he was in. She had been told his chances of survival weren't great.
Hayden looked down, a single tear rolling down her cheek. "There isn't much left unsaid between us, Topher. I always protected you, and you returned the favor by being the greatest brother a sister could have. I want to tell you that your niece is doing amazing, and she really misses you. You have another niece or nephew on the way, and when it comes I hope..." her voice broke. "I hope..."
Hayden looked at the heart monitor, which was flat.
"I hope you could see them..."
