The Kiss

Katniss POV
I sit down next to my friend Madge at our usual lunch spot under the pine tree. I can see my sister, Prim, and Gale's brothers, Rory and Vick walking towards us only 100 or so metres away. Gale should be here soon. He's probably just cleaning himself up after phys-ed. My thoughts are distracted as a girl from Gale's year approaches us.
"Hello Everdeen", she says with a cold tone. I look up at her. She isn't much taller than me and is holding a flask and an old box that now holds her lunch. She's from the Seam like me. You can tell from her thin build, olive skin, dark hair and grey eyes but she borders on merchant girl as she has bright coloured bows in her hair and a rather pretty dress that I'm sure my sister would like.
"Hello", I reply.
"Is there something I can help you with?", I ask her when she doesn't do anything.
"Yes, there is actually. You could back away from Gale".
My sister, Rory and Vick arrive and I can see a confused look cross their faces and I'm sure it's mirrored in mine. Gale and I are just friends, even though I sometimes wish we were a little more then that.
"What about Gale?"
"You know exactly what I mean. With you always around Gale, I can't make my move on him", she snaps back.
Lots of girls at school have a crush on Gale and usually they just glare at me so this is new.
"Well if he likes you then he will go over and ask you out on a date or whatever you people do. So I don't see why I should back off.", I retort back.
The girl snaps and pulling the lid off the flask of water she tips it on my head drenching my entire torso. I jump to my feet and dump the contents of my own flask on top of her. Rory hands his own flask to me which is also emptied on top of the girl.
She squeals and runs away as we burst out laughing.
"Catnip!", I hear a familiar voice yell, "What on earth are you doing?!".
"Well hello pretty boy!", I yell back at Gale.
"Pretty boy? Since when do you call me pretty boy?"
"Since some stupid girl from your year comes over and tells me to back off from you so that you will ask her to be your girlfriend."
"Stella did what?", he asks incredulously only a few metres away now.
"Yes. And then she poured he water all over me when I said no."
He's laughing as well now. We rarely laugh outside the woods so I start smiling.
He sits down and we all start eating.
It's afternoon now and Gale and I are sitting in our usual place on the rock game bags packed with assorted berries and herbs, recapping the day's events.
"Are there any girls that you like?", I ask as we discuss the incident from lunch.
"Well there is my mother, Posy, you, Prim, your mother and Madge isn't to bad", he says and I know he's smiling even though I am looking at the sun set on the horizon of pine trees. I give a slight groan.
"I mean as in like-like. You know, when you want them to be your girlfriend."
"Well there is this one girl.", he says and I feel as if he has just torn my heart out, thrown it in the dirt, stamped on it and shot it through the middle with one of his arrows but before I can dwell on it any longer he has leant over and pressed his lips against mine.
