Sapphire worked diligently on Seamus' case, trying to prove him innocent. Until then, the evidence was stacked against him, and he was forced to remain behind bars. The others wouldn't grant Iris access, but that's never stopped her before. She waited until everyone was asleep, then made her way down the back stairwell. Her eyeliner was winged just right, and her hair fell perfectly. Iris wore a long, black night gown without any sleeves, only lace. She smelled of bliss, and her eyes sparkles with passion.
Iris passed by Sapphire's desk to see she was still hard at work, not even lifting her head to say hi. She laughed to see her old friend back, the way she remembered her. To no surprise, Seamus wasn't asleep. How could anyone sleep in a stone cold cell like this? He glowed at the refreshing sight of his gorgeous love. Without missing a beat, he stood and kissed her through the bars.
Their lips parted, but their hands met. Both smiled at the touch of one another. They weren't apart for more than a few days, yet it felt like years, the way true love must be.
"Why did I ever hurt you?" He whispered.
"Oh, Seamus, we've been over this. I only hurt myself. Don't speak that way, love." She responded with glassy eyes.
Seamus glanced at the ground from the tension building. Her eyes always tend to make him nervous like that, but he'd rather have that then any other weakness. He swallowed down fear as he looked back at her. "You know I didn't do it, right?" He asked.
"Of course." She smiled, lighting up his hope as she did so. "Seamus, today something happened..."
"What?" He asked, his voice as pure as his heart.
Iris couldn't bring herself to say it, not yet. She shook her head, telling him, "Never mind."
The quiet filled the moment, but it was shattered by a hand roughly grabbing Iris. She angrily looked up to see Aleks, emotionless while he dragged her away. "I believe the rules state no visitors." He groaned as she yanked away.
"I can walk myself back upstairs, thank you very much." She snapped, moving in front of him.
Even if he was ill tempered towards the beauty, he still admired her from behind. "Damn, your ass looks fantastic, babe."
She quickly turned around and slapped him, grunting out of distress as she did. "Pig." Iris stated before running back to her room.
Iris crashed on her bed, resting her hands across her stomach. What had happened earlier, she couldn't even believe. How was she going to tell Seamus? She closed her eyes and thought over the scene once again.
Her heart was still trembling from what had happened, so to calm her nerves, Ze offered to take her on a walk. Every second she wanted to burst out crying; she felt so weak and helpless without Seamus.
"Are you going to be okay?" He gently asked as they leaned over the guardrail of the bridge. They were walking through the boardwalk downtown to clear their heads.
A shaky breath left her mouth. "Honestly, I have no clue. I don't know what to think anymore."
"And... that's okay. Sly has shown us that you don't even need to think in the first place." Ze joked, making her giggle a bit. "Hey, there's that pretty smile. I started to think it died."
"Ha, I did too, but ever since we were little, you managed to bring it out."
"What can I say?" He shrugged. "I was born to make people la-" Ze stopped midsentence to hear Danz coming in over the communicator. He explained that there was a fire happening near their location, so the two were off to save the day like always.
When they arrived, they realized it wasn't just a simple house fire. The building engulfed with flames was a tavern where the low life's hung out. Ze went in first, keeping a close eye on Iris as he did so. A board on the wall fell down, revealing about two dozen trapped bats. They flew out, their wings engulfed in flames, and Ze instinctively placed a protective hand over Iris' torso.
His eyes widened, "Iris, go outside, now! I'll handle this."
"But-"
"Now!" He commanded, trying his best not to be overwhelmingly harsh.
She ran out of the building and waited with the rest of the crowd until he put out the fire by himself. Iris shook in her place as he returned, covered in ash. The people around her cheered at his heroic acts, but he asked that they'd stop like normal. He never really liked the praise, just the action.
Ze came to Iris, looking her dead in the eyes. He took a deep breath in before delivering news that she couldn't even process.
Iris reopened her eyes. After running the memory over, she could just barely grasp the concept. All she could ask in that moment was that Seamus would be holding her again, soon.
The others never believed Sapphire; who could with such little evidence? Eventually, Nova and Kootra came around, but the others were still hesitant. Sapphire sat at her desk near Seamus' holding cell scrounging for any last bit of help that could convince the others of his innocence. Deep down, they had to have known he would never do this. She rested her hand on her palm, staring at the blank wall.
Sapphire felt defeated, unable to do what she's built for. She let her eyes absentmindedly fall to her arm, where her tattoo that connected her to Iris laid. In that moment, realization hit her harder than anything has before.
With fire on her heels, she bolted up the stairwell, coming out in the main hallway. She stopped, unable to even take time to catch her breath, and knocked on Iris' door. The sleeping beauty came out, hair in a mess, with eyes that were begging to be away from the light.
"Iris, I think I've figured it out, but I need your help." She blurted out, forcing her way into Iris' room.
Iris rubbed her eyes, then ran a hand through her hair, shaking herself awake. "For starters, it's three in the morning, so I'm a little slower than normal. Figured what out?"
Sapphire didn't even apologize for her rude awakening. She went on to explain. "Do you remember years ago when we were working for AH?"
"How could I forget? We were stationed with a bunch of drunks for months on end." She replied.
"It was fun at times! Anyways, when we had to retrieve some data, you used a spell to change one of the guys' appearances, remember?"
"Yeah," Iris responded as she sat down on her bed. "But what does that have to do with anything?"
"What if someone else knows the same spell?" Sapphire asked, turning her head to the side like a cat.
Iris let her eyes fall to the ground. She thought over it, processing the thoughts through her head. Then she bolted up and ran into the hall barefoot. Despite her slipping a few times, she made her way to the control room, where Kootra was on watch for the night.
Gasping for air, she blurted out her realization. "The se dealbant spell.... it's an old... Latin spell..."
"Slow down," Kootra said, trying to calm her, but it wasn't much use.
Iris slowed her breathing to explain. "It's a spell that can disguise someone's appearance. It only lasts a few hours at most, but it's enough to drop Seamus' case. Around here, we have no clue what kind of ties people have."
"I understand, and he'll be freed, but this means there's still a rat in the group," he replied.
"Yeah," she continued. "And I have a pretty good idea who it is."
