C H R I S T I N E

Later that day, I called Susan's Children (the orphanage) to tell them that we would be coming by the next day. She said that we could go to their website just to see all the children before we go in to adopt. Brandon and Ashton turned on my computer and went to susanschildren.com to look. Hunter still wasn't extremely fond of the idea, so he stayed back and watched, as the three of us crowded around the computer. The website asked us a couple of questions before we could look.

1. Age preference for the child?

a. 1-5
b. 5-10
c. 10-15
d. other

Hunter said that 5-10 would probably be good because he thought the kid should be old enough to wipe its own butt but not too old, to the point where they have an attitude. We all agreed and Brandon chose letter b.

There were two other questions concerning the condition of the house the child would be staying in. Then we could see the children that were in Susan's care. There was a 10 year old named Josephine who had anger management issues who tried to strangle her past parents. We decided that we didn't want to be strangled, so we kept scrolling. There was a little girl named Alexandra who looked really sweet. There was a little description of her underneath her picture.

It said, 'Alexandra Renee Foxe: age 8. Parents died and brother died in a car crash 4  years ago. Has reoccurring nightmares of things she won't talk about. Likes the colours blue and green. She will usually do anything you tell her do, and is very easygoing.'

Brandon said that we should keep and eye on Alexandra when we visited tomorrow. Everyone agreed, and went up to bed. I had a lot on my mind, so I didn't get much sleep. I closed my eyes for a second, and when I opened them again, it was morning.

I woke up to see Alex dripping in sweat, crying softly in her bed. I checked the clock to see that it was 3:30 a.m.

I sighed and said, "You must've had the dream again."

She nodded, but didn't say anything.

Alex and I have been best friends basically ever since she got here. (When Alex was 4 and I was 9) I pretty much took the role of an older sister and we've been insperable ever since. And it was scary every time that she got adopted because I would never know if she would come back or if I would be alone forever. I had never been adopted. Never. It really hurts to know that just no one wants me and I'll never have a family. Anyway, back to the story.

I quickly went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water for Alex. When I went back to our room, she was sitting up, staring at the wall. I didn't want to disturb her so I waited about two minutes before saying, "Alex? Are you okay?"

I guess she didn't hear me, so I said, "Alex?"

She came out of her daze and asked, "What?"

I laughed and said, "Well you were staring at the wall for about two minutes,"

"Oh."

"Miss Susan told me earlier that there are some people coming tomorrow to adopt, so you should get some rest. You always want to look your best." I told her.

I knew that she wouldn't actually get to sleep but it was worth a try.
