I try to shut the door quietly, but nothing can get past my mother.

“Katharine! I think you have some explaining to do!” she yells. I look at the floor. “Well?”

“I’m sorry, mum. I didn’t mean to hurt her feelings,” I say. There’s no point in trying to explain what really happened.

My mother looks at me skeptically. “You better call that Chelsea girl and apologize.”

I take my time to remove my jacket and shoes.

“Hurry up! Now! Move it!” She orders.

I scurry to our home phone and dial the number my mum spits out like a computer.

“Hello?” the annoying, flirty voice of Chelsea fills my ear.

“Hi, Chelsea, it’s Katharine. I’m calling to apologize for what happened on Monday. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings and I hope you can forgive me,” I may not believe what I said, but it’s my only option.

“Oh, bitch, please, I was never mad! How could I get angry at you? Just stay out of my business, and away from Logan. Okay? Buh-Bye!” Chelsea coos in her sugary sweet voice.

I roll my eyes, but say “Thank you!” into the already dead line.

“How’d it go?” My mum questioned as soon as the phone hits its holder.

        “Fine, mum,” I say.

“I want you to know that that can never happen again! The poor poor girl must’ve been so traumatized! How could you do that to someone? I thought I taught you well. Katharine, you are a disgrace!” My mother howls, her voice getting increasingly loud and angered with each poisoned word.

“I’m sorry,” I mumble. A hand comes in contact with my face, and a burning tingle is left on my left cheek. I whimper.

“What was that?” My mother says.

“I’m sorry!” I squeak as my mum twists my wrist and drags me up the staircase. She releases the iron grip on my hand to only replace it in my hair. I cry out in pain.

“One more time, darling,” she smiles evilly.

“I’m sorry and it won’t happen again,” I promise through fresh tears.

My mother lets go, a satisfied look on her face, and shoves me through the door into my room. “That’s what I thought!” She shrieks.
