Prologue

I remember the day we met.
And no, we didn't meet in a super touchy way like most best friends do. We actually met in kindergarten. Well...maybe it's easier if I just tell you about it.
* * * *
So, I was the new kid. Well I mean, new by about 2 weeks anyway. My family had just moved to the small town, Paradise CA. My brother David was in fourth grade and my other brother James was in second. They would be new too. My first day as the new kid was normal. I walked in, teacher introduced me, I sat down in my spot and that was it. Until recess.

The teacher announced it was snack time so we all went outside with our food. After we ate we were allowed to play on the playground. There were also kids from the other grades outside. But I noticed these three boys by the sand box. Fifth graders. Think they're all that. I just ignored them.

Then I heard someone yell,"HEY!".

I turned around and saw the big kids still by the sandbox. But now I could also see a small boy. And he looked mad.

He was a scrawny little kid. His skin was a medium brown, just a little darker than mine. He had short black hair and blue eyes underlined by freckles that ran over his nose.

The big kids were laughing. One of them said,"What's the matter kindergarten baby? Did we knock down your little sand castle?". They all laughed and kicked sand at him before waking away. I thought he was gonna start crying.

Nope.

He picked up a plastic shovel and threw it at the mean kids. It hit one of them in the head. They turned around and were about to charge at the kid but I stepped in front of them, kicked one in the knee, and ran, dragging the kid with me. We hid under a play structure and waited until they weren't chasing us any more. I sat down and he did too. He said thank you and I said 'your welcome'. After a while I finally speak up.

"So what's your name?"

"Daniel Jacob" he says, "but everyone calls me DJ. What's your name?". I smile and tell him, "My name is Katherine. But my mommy and daddy call me Kitty. You can give me a nickname if you want to.".

He thought for a while before saying, "How 'bout Kathy? Yeah. To me your Kathy.". He smiled and I smiled back.

From then on everyone started calling me Kathy, and from then on DJ and I were best friends. We did everything and went everywhere together. We were inseparable. We were always in the same class every year. The summer before third grade, we built a little tree house fort in the woods behind his house.(The one on the cover)We shared alot of memories in there. Even the bad ones.

Like the first time I saw him cry.

We were in fourth grade and his dad had left for the military. DJ hid in our club house and wouldn't come out. When he finally let me in, I saw the tears on his face. I'd never seen him like that before.

After a while he was okay though. Things went back to normal for a while after that. Our families went to Disneyland that summer and Fifth grade was awesome.

Then, a month before summer, my parents announced we were moving. I yelled and cried and locked myself in my room. Moving, I could accept I guess. But how would I tell DJ? How could I?

When I finally told him, it was worse than I thought. He just let me explain then said 'OK' and walked away. He didn't talk to me the last weeks of school. I felt I deserved it though.

Three days after school ended, my family was leaving. I was about to get into the car when I heard a familiar voice yell ,"Wait!". I turned around and saw DJ running towards me. I ran to meet him and he hugged me. "I'm sorry" he whispered. I pull away from the hug and say, "I know.".

"I'll miss you Kathy."he says. "It's just that, after my dad left, I didn't want to say goodbye again." He looks down at his feet." It's okay" I tell him." I'll miss you too.". We hug one last time and he hands me something. He tells me it's an early birthday present. I thank him and get into my car. I wave to him as we pull away.

I decide to open the present now. I gasped when I saw it.

It was a silver necklace with the word friends engraved on it. It was shaped like a puzzle piece with a small magnet in it. I knew that DJ must have the other half.

So I knew that next time I saw him, we could connect the two pieces. As best friends again.

Someday...

K, I know it's long for a prologue but I had it pre written on a notebook so it seemed shorter at first. I'm still proud of this though so, yeah! Hope you enjoyed!
