Chapter 16: Parents

Jen Pov:

It's been about a week since Jesse came to visit Emma. Colin and I are in the process of looking for four bedroom houses. We haven't had a lot of luck yet but we'll keep looking. On Monday Emma starts her homeschooling again and Evan starts preschool, so tomorrow (Saturday) we are flying to Chicago so they can meet my parents. I'm beyond nervous of what they'll think. When I introduced Jesse to my dad he wasn't that nice, let's just say they didn't get along that well. Not only am I nervous about Colin but they haven't even met Emma yet. Today I am taking Emma out to lunch to ask her about being my daughter legally. My life feels extremely stressful right now.

"Emma are you ready to go"

"Yea mom hold on a sec"

We grab our jackets and head out to the car

"Thanks for taking me to lunch mom, we haven't had time just the two of us lately"

"Yes I know"

We drive up to one of our favorite Chinese restaurants and sit down at a table. We order drinks and talk

"So mom have you and Colin decided on a house yet"

"No, we are deciding between two right now. They're only about 10 minutes from our current home"

"That's good, are they really that much bigger"

"Well it's a four bedroom house. The one I like the best has the master bedroom on the first floor and three bedrooms upstairs."

"Wow that sounds big, but I've never really been in many big houses"

"Well at least  in this house you don't have to share a room with me."

"But I like sleeping with you, it makes me feel...wanted"

"Oh Emma I love you a lot you know that right"

"Yes...."

Then the waiter came over and we ordered our food.

"Emma"

"Yea"

"I wanted to take you out to lunch to ask you something"

"Did Colin propose?!?!"

"Umm no"

"Oh, I thought you were going to ask if I was okay with you getting married. Which I'm fine with by the way"

"Haha no that's not what I want to ask.  I'm not sure he's going to propose any time soon"

"Oh come on, he is obviously is in love with you and you are carrying his baby."

"True but I'm not expecting anything"

"Even though he's meeting your parents tomorrow"

"Emma stop it"

"So what did you want to ask me"

"I want to ask.....if....you will be my daughter"

"What? I thought I...."

"No I mean legally"

"What?"

"I want to adopt you"

"Seriously"

"Yes....if that's okay with you"

She gets up from the table and runs to the bathroom.

Emma Pov:

My mom asked me if she could adopt me. My mind went blank I didn't know what to say so I ran to the bathroom. I stood over the sink breathing heavily and splashed some water in my face. Of course I wanted to be her daughter but now she is willing to adopt me. What if I screw it up and then she regrets keeping me. Then Jen walks in the bathroom and I see tears on her face.
