I ran to the open closet and clasped my hand over my mouth in horror. Streams of tears ran down my face as I stood and watched my mothers hanging body.
The rope tied around her neck was digging into her throat, creating red chaffing marks. Her lips were a purple with a tinge of blue and her eyes were closed.
I fell to my knees hyperventilating. Tears hit the ground with a slight tap.
"Carmen!?" I heard Max as he ran up the hallway and barged into the room.
"Oh Jesus..." He said breathlessly.
"Carmen..." He knelt down and wrapped his arms around me and I began to rock in fear. Screaming cries passed my lips and bounced off the walls back into my ears.
Meanwhile Pax, Karli and Jordan had entered the room also. They all hugged each other turning away from the scene.
"Shhh" max said as he tried to comfort me, by patting my hair and rubbing my back.
"Max..." Paxton trailed off and and handed him a note.
His eyes skimmed the page.
"Carmen, look" he passed me the note.
I wiped my eyes on my arm with my jumper. Mascara and eyeliner came off, it was going to stain but I didn't care.
I practiced calming my breaths and started to read.
"Dear Carmen,
I'm sorry I had to leave you in such a horrid time. But while you were out I turned on the radio and hear the latest news... I'm sure you knew the effects the flu had. I was already infected and it was to late for me but I couldn't stand letting it effect and be a danger to you. I love you. I know you can survive just remember to stick together.
Go to the safe place.
You are strong. I raised a fighter. You will figure out what to do.
Love mum x"
Surprisingly a strange calm feeling overtook my body.
I knew where to go.
I stopped crying and stood up.
"I know where to go"
They looked stunned.
"Are you okay? Your mum just died! That was a short mourning..." Karli said.
"I'm sure I will have plenty of other people to mourn over, plus, I can cry later. We cant really put off survival."
"Jesus your a strong bitch" Jordan said as he scratched roughly at his covered arm and gave me a hard pat on the back
"Thanks?" I coughed out, unsure whether to take that as a compliment or an insult...
"What's the safe place?" Max asked. His hand placed behind his neck as he flexed.
My mind wanders back to when I was little. My mum, dad and I every holiday we went up to a isolated lake house up north.
We had so much fun. The house was old, yet reasonably modern and kept updated.
When my father passed away my mother and I would go back there almost every weekend we called it "The Safe Place" because it brought back the most comforting memories.
It takes about four to five hours to get there.
So we better get going.
"Its a place up north that's guaranteed to be safe. For now at least."
"There is a house we can live in for a while, and if worst comes to worst we can park another car on the other side of the lake as an escape route. All we would have to do is swim across."
"Keen!" Paxton yelled.
"It's a big house too. So if we are lucky enough to find any other survivors, the house will be a perfect residency." I continued.
"Awesome-" Jordan exclaimed.
"- But before we do anything" I interrupted.
"I have a few theories based on the last zombie we fought"
"Correction" karli piped up
"The ONLY zombies we have fought"
"Right..." I say as I think back to the pharmacy.
We all filed out into the lounge and sat down.
"We need to get clean, un-scented clothes"
"Why?" Asked Jordan. I glared at him. If he let me finish he would know why.
"-Because the zombies found us by scent. They also knew the direction to head toward by tilting their head and listening to our footsteps."
It fell quiet.
Again.
"Also their eyesight isn't very good. We an use that to our advantage"
"How?"
"Welll we are going up to a lake house... High is surrounded by bush. If we stick to greens, black and cameo clothes it makes it a little easier for us to hide"
"You're a genius!" Max yelled.
"I know" I replied as I pretended to hair flick.
"So... If we wash as much as possible and keep changing our clothes. Our scent will be less detectable?" Paxton asked curiously. She made sense. To be honest she is really logical and can store knowledge like Wikipedia.
"Exactly" I replied. I realised we couldn't take anything old. We needed all new stuff. A lot of It too. We needed weapons, food, water and new clothes.
Time to tap into our hidden criminal and start stealing shit.
