As I stood in the kitchen with Mason, I wiped my tears and sighed.

I needed that.

"Right, lets get cooking"

I turned toward the sink and continued to fill the pasta pot with water, popping my hip to the side and resting on my right leg.

Mason quietly started de-boning the fish.

During the day Garret played with the pipes and finally got the water working, now we can shower and wash our food

"When Garret and I were little, we used to help our mum cook basically every night" as he told me his story, his face lit up just a little and he began to smile.

"I spent a lot of time with my mum, she was pretty cool"

That made me smile.

I guess Mason had a heart that wasn't so cold after all.

Stupidly I opened my mouth without thinking.

"Did the flu get her?" The second I said it I knew it was out of line.

Mason went quiet.

"Shit, I'm sorry, sometimes I don't think I just speak and-"

"No" he said interrupting me.

"It's fine, uh it was Cancer actually"

After placing the pot onto the ring I hoisted myself into the kitchen counter.

"Yeah, cancer got my dad too"

Finally, there was something that I could connect to with Mason.

He gave me a sympathetic smile.

"What do you want me to do with this fish?"

Quickly I slid off the bench and focused on what I was doing. My hands went to my forehead as I frantically looked around for my other ingredients.

I drained the pasta and poured the hot tomato sauce into the pot.

"Chuck it in here and il grab the plates"

Opening the cupboard door I picked up 8 plates and set them on the table nicely.

After Adding forks and knives I turned on my heel and headed back to the kitchen.

Whack.

Stumbling backward I lifted my eyes to the figure I had smacked into.

Peter.

"Is there anything I can help you with?"

An apology would be nice, since you're built like a brick shit house and that hurt.

"I think you have done enough for today" I said bitterly and pushed passed him.

Bitch mode, check

Snarky comment, check

Lie, in progress

"Carmen, what's wrong! What did I do?"

"Nothing, I'm fine!"

Lie, check

Slowly I started dishing up the plates full of food.

"Mace, can you bring out the bread rolls please!?" I yelled into the kitchen.

"Sure thing! Chicken wing!" He hollered back.

Sure enough he brought them out quick smart. Nodding to Peter as a quick hello.

As I started to head outside to call everyone for dinner, Peters hand grabbed me and pulled me back.
