We spent the next few hours exploring and unpacking. Settling in. It was all surreal.
As I say on my bed and though back to my dad. How much he loved it here. How many memories were made here. Most of my childhood Life was here .
I started playing with the silk blanket and staring out the window. The feel was so familiar, it was oddly warm and nice.
A knock interrupted my train of thought.
Beth's head popped in the doorway. Her hair swayed with the sudden movement.
"Hey Carmen, we are gonna start a bomb fire if you want to join"
Her smile beamed like a headlight. I suddenly felt like a lost deer.
I don't know what it is about Beth, she has this essence about her.
No not essence.
It's more like a skill.
The skill to glance at you for a second and make you feel worthless.
But saying that, since her smile is so rare, when it is shown its a privilege and warming to know its there for you.
"Carmen?" Her soft voice snapping me back to reality.
"Huh? Sorry. Um yeah sounds good"
"Great!"
There's that winning smile again.
Before I had time to blink she had vanished down the hall.
I sighed and flopped backwards onto the bed.
Zombies.
The walking dead.
Roaming corpses.
No matter what you call them. It's stupid to think that these things, don't even have a brain. Or logical reasoning but they, are the ones running our world now.
"Carmen!" I heard max yell from downstairs.
I sat up angrily, and threw my legs over the edge of the bed.
"I'm coming!" I screeched.
When I stood up I bent down and grabbed my shoes.
I hobbled down the hallway, while I tried to put my shoes on.
When I stood outside, I was hit with the smell of burning wood and alcohol.
The back lawn was set up really well.
Logs were set up around the blazing fire. Bright red and orange embers popped and sizzled in the night sky.
The coffee table was put near the log. Chips and beer covers the oak surface.
Karli, Beth and Macy sat on a log, a creme blanket wrapped around all three of them. Beers in each hand.
Not on my watch.
I folded my arms angrily and began to storm towards them.
Before I had the chance to open my mouth, a hand wrapped around my forearm and pulled be back.
"What the fuck?" I cried furiously.
"Carmen. Don't."
Was he serious?
Or had he just received a major blow to the cranium?
"Really?" I said, mouth dropped in amazement at his ignorance.
He shrugged.
I yanked my arm from his grip.
"Firstly. May I remind you this is an apocalypse? Not a vacation. We must be on alert twenty-four-seven. They can attack any minute! I am worried enough as I is, without the worry of whether or not they are sober enough to protect themselves. So don't you dare! Tell me I'm over reacting because I am absolutely-"
"Right" max finished for me.
I scowled at him.
He stepped back and raised his hands in defeat.
"Thank you" I huffed as I blew a loose hair out of my eyes.
I continued fast paced walk towards them.
"Hey."
Beth's eyes pulled away from Macy and locked with mine.
"Hey!" She beamed sweetly.
It. Was. Sickening.
I snatched a bottle from her hand and poured the liquor into the dry soil below my feet.
"What the hell?"
"Oh I'm sorry? We're you drinking that?" I said bitterly.
"As a matter of fact I was... What's wrong with you?" She asked, she looked at Karli for support.
I quickly glanced at her too. She looked at both of us. Conflicted.
"This is not a vacation Beth!"
I grabbed Karli and Macy's beer too and threw them into the bush, hearing them smash.
"It's just a drink Carmen! Jesus!" Pathetic laughter erupted from Beth's peach lips.
"Look." I said leaning toward her.
"This is life or death and I am leading this group whether you like it or not. I got us here. I got the food and figured out the zombies weaknesses. If you don't like the way I run things. Feel free to fuck off."
I had noticed but I had my finger pointing to the driveway.
She was shocked.
"Fine." She stated.
"Macy and I will leave tomorrow morning."
Now I was the shocked one. I didn't think she really would leave. To be honest we are safer in numbers.
"Fine" I repeated.
And with that I turned and walked back into the house.
"Carmen..." Max started.
Standing on the first step toward the upstairs. I hung my head and stared at the floor, fighting the urge to look over my shoulder to Max.
"Don't Max. Just. Don't, please?" I begged desperately.
We stood in silence. Until I finally heard him turn and walk outside. Shutting the door behind him.
Sprinting up the stairs triggered my tiredness.
Once I got to my room. I smacked my head onto the pillow and fell into a deep. Peaceful sleep.
*****
A faint creek filled my ears and woke me from my slumber.
"Car?" Max whispered.
"Mm?" I mumbled as I rubbed sleep from my eyes and yawned.
"Beth and Macy are gone"
"Mm" I said, falling back asleep.
"And... They took Karli"
