I slowly reached out to touch Beth. My fingertips brushed her shoulder before she shrugged them off and cried harder into Macy's body. Her hands were tangled into Macy's bloody blonde hair.

Everyone scurried out of the water and surround them.

Garret's face turned white once he realized how much this hurt Beth.

"Beth... I'm so sor-"

"Don't you dare!" She said lifting Her head from Macy's chest. She flung her finger and pointed at him absolutely devastated.

"Don't you DARE speak to me! Look what you have done! How can you ever apologize for something like this? Macy was my best friend. The only thing close to family that I had left! And... And you killed her!" She screamed at the top of her lungs. Tears ran down her face. My stomach churned with sadness.

"Beth she was a zombie, she attacked Carmen..." Garret said trying to explain.

Her mouth turned downward as she pursed her lips in fury, blood smudged across her pale forehead and salty tears stained her cheeks.

"We could have looked after her until we found a cure." She spat at him.

"We are not going to find a cure Beth" I said. Bringing my knees into the fetal position as I sat next to her, stones dug into my back and cut my flesh a little. I didn't care, I felt so numb and empty it was the only thing letting me know I was alive.

She collapsed her head back onto her body as we all watched her break down in front of us. Paxton and I were quietly crying ourselves, I felt horrible. I couldn't imagine what Garret was feeling.

I stood up and grabbed his hand. His eyes were full of pity and self loathing.

"Please. Don't blame yourself. She was dead. You saved a life, my life" I whispered in his ear softly. He squeezed my hand before letting go.

Everyone still in their underwear. Garret leaned down toward Macy and scooped her body up.

Beth began to panic.

"Where are you taking her?!" She said getting to her feet.

Garret stared at Macy before turning to Beth.

"We are going to have a funeral. She was so important to you, she deserves a proper burial"

Beth smiled weakly and picked up Macy's summer dress and held it close.

"That would be... Lovely" she said between tears of semi joy.

We all began to walk back. Beth's breathing was hitched and her tears started to catch in her throat. She nibbled at her fingernails as a result of being so frightened and alone. Macy must have been so special to Beth. She doesn't seem like the person that breaks down very easily.

Feeling as if I must try to make her feel even just a little better I extended my hand to her. At first she looked at it as if she were making a deal with the devil. Then she kindly accepted.

Usually Beth looks so strong and independent. It was unsettling seeing her so distraught and broken.

Her brown curls were wet and dripping from the lake. The small petite body she had was shaking from coldness.

We decided to chuck our clothes into the lake. They were ready too overused and our smell would have been riddled in them.

All of us were freezing.

Garret was in the front with Macy in his arms. Blood dripped from her skull onto the gravel making a red dotted pathway up too the house.

Once we got to the house Karli and Paxton took Beth up stairs to help her get changed.

Beth hand not said a word since the funeral was mentioned.

I got changed and headed downstairs to the boys.

Folding my arms for maximum warmth I approached the digging boys

My feet stopped inches away from the head of the grave that was currently being dug out.

"Where did you find the shovels?" I asked flatly. Emotion was overrated, especially at a time like this.

"Garage" Mason answered.

Mason, Garret and Peter worked together on the grave while Max put Macy in her summer dress and positioned her hair over her broken cranium.

I headed inside to check on the girls. As I walked up the stairs I could hear the girls mumbling something about saying a few words.

Carefully I knocked on the wooden door. Waiting for acceptance for entry.

"Come in" Beth sniffed. Stepping into her bedroom was overwhelming. The energy in this room was very sharp. Every step felt as if I was being impaled.

"The boys are digging the grave now" I said quietly, Karli was playing with the corner of the duvet as Paxton French plaited Beth's hair.

Paxton yanked out strands of hair and twisted them in place. Beth's face was blank and her bed jerked backward to Pax each time a new piece of hair was pulled.

"All done" Pax said as she fastened the hair in place with a hair tie. Beth ran her fingertips down her hair, caressing her plait gently.

"Guess it's now or never" Beth said with a sigh. With that we all followed her downstairs and back out into the backyard.

The grave was now fully dug pit and they had placed a plain white sheet in the bottom of the grave. The sides still outside of the grave ready for Macy to be wrapped and covered in.

In the corner of my eye I spotted some flowers growing near the side of the house. I quietly crept toward them and pulled off a hand full of Lilly's and some other bright wild flowers.

Paxton was making a daisy chain to place on Macy's head.

I handed out flowers to everyone to sprinkle only during the "ceremony"

Once Paxton was finished, Max placed the crown on her head and the boys lowered her down into the ground and covers the rest of the white sheet over her.

Everyone stood in a circle. Everyone seemed to be holding someone's hand.

Luckily I got to hold peters.

It was silent. Suddenly Beth piped up.

"I'll go first" she announced.

"Macy was an amazing girl" she began. Water building up in her eyes. Everyone else's too.

"Her smile lit up the world. Her personality was the best anyone could have gotten, she was sweet, generous, kind and caring. I can't believe how lucky I was to have a friend like her. We met in school, I was a loner and had no one. But she made the effort to go out of her way and tried to connect with me like no one else did. She was my only friend. To call her a friend would be an understatement. She was my sister" Beth threw her flowers into the pit and blew a kiss.

"Goodbye Macy. I love you so much. You will never be forgotten"

After that we all spoke a few nice words about her and added our flowers too.

Just as mason and garret were about to shovel the dirt back into the grave Beth began to sing.

"Mama told me not to waste my life she said spread your wings my little butterfly, don't let what they told you keep you up at night, coz they can't detain you these wings were made to fly"

As she kept going everyone joined in as respect.

After the chorus she stopped.

"I never sing, and Macy always asked me too. That was her favorite song" Beth nodded at the boys and they continued to bury Macy.

After about twenty minutes they had finished. They smoothed the surface and made a cross out of wood.

We all headed inside for some food and drink by the fire.

The flickering flame filled the house with warmth. Most of us were curled up on the floor or snuggled in the couch.

No one talked for the rest of the night. We just sat in silence.

I don't know if it was out of respect for Macy.

Or just that everyone was to saddened to speak.
