A tinkle of bells sounded as Jake pushed the door open to Holly's Cafe.
"Hey Jake! What can I get you today?" Holly, the owner of the place, asked warmly.
"Hey Holly! Um, just give me three boxes of glazed donuts, please." Jake replied with a smile.
"Three boxes? I guess you're pretty hungry, huh? Well you are a growing 3rd grader," Holly teasingly said as she placed the order at the cashier.
"Actually, this is for the children's group at the church. We're doing a play for Christmas. You know, the birth of Jesus?" Jake sat down on a nearby chair to wait for the donuts.
"Oh right! I remember seeing that on the church bulletin last Sunday. So this is your first practice?"
"Yeah and that's why Mom said we had to bring a snack for the whole group."
"Where is your mom, by the way?" questioned Holly as she packed the donuts into a box and handed them to Jake.
He handed her the amount of money needed and said, "She's outside, waiting in the car. She said she couldn't go out since she slept at two last night and apparently has bags under her eyes." Jake shrugged.
Holly laughed and said, "Typical Kelly. Well, tell her I said hi and that those bags aren't going to go away until she stops working so late."
Jake nodded and waved as he made his way out of the cafe.
"Good luck with the play!" Holly shouted after him.
"Thank you!"
Jake hugged the box of donuts close as he ran to the waiting white Lexus, minding the slippery ice, and jumped in as if someone was chasing him. He handed the box to his mom in the front and blew warm breath into his freezing hands.
"See, I told you to take your gloves with you!" Jake's mom exclaimed when she caught him in the action.
"Ok ok, I'll listen to you next time," Jake said as he crossed his eyes at his mother playfully and put his hands over the car heater.
Jake's mom ruffled his hair with a grunt and a smile. "You better be glad you have such a cool mother who buys your friends donuts, young man." She glared at him jokingly and started to steer the car out of the parking lot.
"Turn up the radio, please," Jake requested in a sweet voice.
Next up is a song by MercyMe.
It's not common to hear a song that's in Joseph's point of view; we all just unintentionally ignore that and move on to Mary.
Yes, that's true. And I'm so glad that MercyMe made this song because whenever I hear it, I can just feel how Joseph would have felt as he held the Savior of this world in his hands. Don't you think you would have felt so exhilarated, yet sorrowful at the same time?
Yes, I totally agree with you, Anne. But enough of our talking. Here's Joseph's Lullaby by MercyMe.
Jake shifted in his seat as he focused on the song. This unusual song, as the radio hosts said.
Go to sleep my Son.
This manger for your bed.
You have a long road before You.
Rest Your little head.
Can You feel the weight of Your glory?
Do You understand the price?
