Write a scene in a mansion.
----------------
River opened the door to the looming mansion as quietly as he could. He worried it would make a squeaking noise like always and ruin the surprise of his presence, but apparently someone had oiled the hinges recently.
He closed the door smoothly and tiptoed his way to the kitchen. Ruby had texted him saying she was at a friend's house, so he knew she wouldn't be there. He hoped to set up everything before she came.
His footsteps slowed when there were voices heard from the library at the very end of the hall. Wondering if she had already come back home, he placed everything down at the counter and quietly made his way down the hall.
It was definitely Ruby talking as he neared the slightly open door to the library. He debated on whether or not to go in, but decided there would be no harm as long as she didn't go into the kitchen.
Just as he was about to push open the door and enter, an unfamiliar male voice stopped him.
"When are you going to tell him? I can't say I'm exactly happy with keeping our relationship a secret." There was a slight pause before the voice continued, "And I have to keep lying to everyone when they ask if I have a girlfriend."
River's blood ran cold as the stranger's words gave him an implication that he didn't want to believe.
He heard Ruby sigh and say in a strained tone, "I know, I know. I'm just trying to find the right moment. It's not easy to break up a three-year relationship, you know?"
There was the rustling of clothes and a sigh. The man's voice came out muffled, "Alright, I'm sorry. I know how hard it is for you too."
The hairs on the back of River's neck stood up when he heard Ruby's reply.
"I'm sorry too. I should've just broken up with him when I realized my feelings for you. It's my fault."
At those words, River immediately turned around and walked back to the kitchen. He couldn't believe what he had just heard. He tried to convince himself that maybe he was misunderstanding all this and they were actually talking about something else; that maybe this was all a dream and he would find himself waking up in his room a moment later.
However, Ruby's last words repeated continuously in his mind.
This wasn't a dream, and no, he hadn't misunderstood.
Taking out a small box from his jacket pocket, he opened it to reveal a diamond ring. It sparkled underneath the ceiling light.
If I could only go one minute back in time... he desperately thought as he closed the box and slid down to the ground with his back leaning on the counter.
