Family Business

Chapter 18

John was sitting on his couch and smoking a cigarette, lost in thought. He had just received the news that Adam went missing soon after they dropped him off in his room.

This was going to be a problem for him if Adam remembers what happened to him after the night he went drinking with William.

His protégé Aaron was not with them that night which was probably a good thing because he would not have taken the attack on his big brother lightly. However things might not have gotten out of hand if he had simply come to them when called.

John put of his cigarette and got up to go see his wife. They had to make a plan because soon they will have to fend off two angry brothers.

He turned around and found himself face to face with Aaron. "I need your help." He said, going further into details.

John was not sure how to respond. This meant that Aaron did not know about his brother yet. That is good news. John had time to prepare himself for when Aaron did find out.

It was the day of the maze and nobody was excited about it except for David and Eric. They spent all morning getting some merchandise and candy from the vendors near the maze. Alice had no energy to tell them off. She stayed quiet, keeping an eye on Dana.

Dana could feel the eyes of all three parents on her. She wondered if her father told her mothers, that she was pregnant, yet. She considered telling them herself but could not bring herself to do it.

Trying to appear normal she bought a hat and few sweets and then they made their way to the grounds.

"We have six tickets." Dana told the man at the entrance.

"We usually let in only 5 at a time." He replied, eyeing her family.

"Can you make an exception? because I might sit out of this anyways." Dana said, lowering her voice so that her parents could not hear.

Giving her a suspicious stare the man nodded and let them through.

There were five entrances to the maze. They were made to stand separately in front of each entrance. David and Eric shared one. Dana went to the one in the corner.

"Now, when I blow my whistle, you move into the maze and I will close the doors behind you. First one out will win and if you run into trouble on the way, don't panic. We have cameras installed at every corner and will send help immediately." The man with the whistle said moving closer to where Dana was standing.

"3....2....1...." He counted before blowing the whistle hard. Alice turned and gave Dana a small smile before they all ran in.

Dana took a few steps into the maze and then stopped and turned around. She waited until the man with the whistle came to close her door.

"Wait!" She said. "I changed my mind. I don't think I want to play." Dana quickly exited the maze, leaving the man alone at the entrance of the maze with his mouth open in surprise.

Cristy had received a text from her father.He had a plan. The text read.

I'm with Aaron, Find Adam and hide him.

Earlier she had informed him that Adam went missing after they put him in his room. He said that Adam might seek revenge for what they did the other night. They needed to keep Aaron out of the picture till they sorted this issue because they knew that Aaron will get upset and risk exposing their secret.

Cristy knew the town like the back of her hand. She also had spies all over who were rewarded with money or threats.

She was waiting at the Copper Pan bar for news when she spotted a young girl walking around outside looking very upset. There was something about the girl that made her walk out and go to her.

"You look lost dear." She said.

"Erm...no I'm ok, I'm just looking for a friend." The girl said softly. She looked exhausted.

"Why don't you come in for a drink, you look exhausted." Cristy said kindly.

"Thanks, I'm Dana by the way." She said, holding out her hand.

"Cristy, Nice to meet you." Cristy said as they went inside. Cristy went behind the bar and got Dana a glass of water.

"You are allowed to do that?" Dana asked, surprised.

"Of course. I own the place." She replied.

"Thanks, I feel so much better now." Dana said gulping down her water.

"So who are you looking for? I have been here a long time, maybe I can help." Cristy said.

Dana quickly pulled out the picture of Aaron, dropping her envelope on the ground. But she did not notice.

"Do you know him?" she asked, showing Cristy the picture.

"Aaron?" Cristy said out loud in surprise.

"Yes!" Dana said excitedly. "Do you know him? I have been looking for him for day. Nobody here seems to know him."

Cristy was thinking fast. "Yes I know him, In fact I will go get him right now."

Dana looked ecstatic. "Thank you so much!"

"In the mean time why don't you try my special, Non-Alcohol, Spriz mix. It's a Lanchester special to bring back some color to your face." Cristy said, pulling a little bottle out of her pocket and carefully mixing it with her drink.

"Sure." Dana said politely, taking the drink from her. Soon her head started to spin.

"I'll be back in ten minutes with Aaron, hang tight." Cristy said, moving towards the door but keeping a close eye on Dana. Then she noticed the envelope on the floor.

She went and picked it up, a pregnancy strip fell out of it. Shocked, Cristy read the letter, Dana had passed out on the counter.

Pregnant? And Aaron was the father? This changes everything....I have to talk to John now!  She thought.

Dana was deviating from his plan!

This made Aaron furious. "I am going out to find her." He told John, getting up.

"No need." John said calmly. "We have the rest of her family, let's draw her to us."

Aaron sat back down with an evil smile on his face as he watched the screens. Dana has no idea who she is dealing with. She will soon regret coming here. He will make sure of that.

Once inside the maze, they cannot come out on their own free will. That was the twist in the game which John enjoyed so much.

Now Dana's family is in trouble and there is nobody to help them.

What will Cristy do to Dana now that she knows Dana is pregnant?
