Chapter 2

Kiera had finally managed to fall asleep early in the morning. She had surprised herself by doing so considering the salad that had been tossing around in her head the whole time.

Cracking open her tired eyes into tiny slits she stretched her stiff muscles. Guessing from the light outside it was already quite late in the morning. Her stomach growled loudly giving her a pause and making her laugh silently to herself. No matter what some things never changed. Mary had always teased her that she had an appetite that rivalled with that of an animal.

She bathed and dressed quickly and went down to prepare breakfast for James and herself. For any other kid it would have been Cereal and milk but not for James. James wouldn’t even bother to look at it.His appetite matched hers. She didn’t know how he managed to guzzle down food like an adult but he did. Sometimes even more. Richard had been like that. He was like a six cylinder double booster engine that guzzled fuel like nobody’s business. Mary had to prepare a feast just to serve them lunch. She smiled to herself remembering the one time when James had started chewing on his toys just because he was so hungry. Mary had appointed Kiera the duty of making sure he never got hungry ever since then.

She prepared waffles, bacon and pancakes kept them aside so she could go wake up James. Taking the steps two at a time she nearly had a coronary when she bumped into James, knocking him down. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes he looked up at her with huge blue eyes.

“Hey sweetie, you’re up already?? Come on let’s get you freshened up.” She said while taking his hand so she could lift him up. James liked to be cuddled a lot but he would never except it. He had a thing about being a big guy.

“Not sweeedy!! I’m a stwong myan. I go boom boom boom.”  He gave repeated airpunches too close to her face. She had to tilt her head back to avoid being clocked in the eye. James had always been unusually strong and fast. His punches really hurt.

“Ok big guy let’s brush your teeth so that I don’t faint because of your breath.”

He blew his sleepy breath on her face repeatedly and giggled like a school girl which turned into a snort at the last minute. She couldn’t help but feel a bit lighter being around James. He made her feel close to whole again. He made her forget her problems and fears for a while. He was the one most important thing to her.

James roared at the entrance of the washroom pretending to be a dragon. He rushed to the basin and rose up on his toes to reach his tooth brush. The sink was pretty high but he was able to reach it by just raising his toes. Looked like his pituitary gland was very active these days. Taking the tooth paste and applying it on his brush she let him brush his teeth on his own. Lately he wanted to do everything on his own, something about him being a man. She smiled at him and patted his head.

“I’ll be outside cleaning up your room. Call me if you need me ok?” By now she should have let him do all this on his own but she guessed she was just too overprotective. Pampering and cajoling him all the time. She would have to stop before he turned into a stubborn snotty kid.

“owhkay” He replied while figuring out how best to move the brush in his mouth. She smiled to herself again. She did that a lot around that bundle of energy.

By the time she folded his quilt and settled out his bed he had managed to get the brush out of his mouth and was trying to gargle but was having trouble because his mouth barely reached the top of the basin. Filling a cup for him she helped him rinse his mouth and pushed him towards the tub.
