Chapter 4
Back when Kiera had lived on the streets for the brief but very insightful time she had learned many things. People belonging to the streets were divided into three. The troublemakers, ones to get you away from these troublemakers and then there the ones who just watched the whole drama.
Kiera had almost always been the one to be Smack in the middle of the whole scene. Troublemakers always found her and she made sure the trouble removers always found her.
But with Alexander she was at a loss. He had the trademark glint of a troublemaker in his eyes but there was something very...soothing about him. His presence made her agitated and calm at the same time. She didn’t even know if that was logically possible!
His penetrating moss green eyes didn’t make things easy either. She didn’t know how such a soft colour could manage to hold such…potency in it.
She slowed down so that he could walk beside her rather than behind her. She felt uneasy knowing he was right behind her.
He came to her side and gave her a look that said he hadn’t missed what her gesture had meant. He seemed to be suppressing a grin which made her want to pull a chunk of his soft rough, ugly and disgusting blonde hair off his scalp. She kept her hands to herself though. She was no street scum now. She was a civilized and practical person, and practical people didn’t go around pulling people’s hair.
She noticed James staring at Alex in a peculiar way and then to her shock he made a bold move he never made with strangers. James caught hold of Alexander’s hand and left her side. Not just that but then he looked up at Alexander and asked him if he would play catch with him. In the most polite voice she had ever heard him talk in!
She just kept staring at James unable to believe her eyes and ears. If nothing James was an extremely shy kid around strangers. She didn’t move or say anything when Alexander bent down to James’s level again.
“I need to show your sister around the place but why don’t I show you outside where the others are playing? I’m sure they wouldn’t mind another participant. The more the merrier eh?”
James bravado faltered at Alexander’s question. She knew it was at the mention of playing with the others. James’s earlier words resounded in her head and she gave him a confident smile. There was no time better than the present. She grabbed the opportunity and goaded James to do the same.
“Yeah, why don’t you go outside and play with the others instead of getting bored walking around with us. I’m sure they can match up to you here.” She made it a point not to use the word kid anywhere so as to maintain his confidence. James wanted to feel like a man, who was she to stop?
She couldn’t help but notice that Alexander had done the same. Not once had he made James feel anything like a kid. Maybe that was the reason James had an instant liking towards him.
James gave a tentative smile and turned to Alexander, still holding his hand and agreed in a soft voice.
Alexander rose to his full height which was a daunting four inches over six feet. And he wasn’t built like a pole either. She could make out rippling triceps and biceps under the sleeves of his loose shirt and his shoulders…my god, his shoulders were a mile long! He made her want to look down and blush like a school girl. She barely kept the impulse under check and followed him out. He twirled James high before setting him on the ground again which seemed to drain the last vestiges of nervousness out of the kid.
The front yard was still strewn with toys and children of different ages-from 4ish to 10ish-running and rolling around. A brief hesitation bloomed in her mind at leaving James in such an environment but she pushed it aside. James could handle this. It was she who couldn’t. It was because of her over-protectiveness that James had become withdrawn.
