Chapter 8

Keira rubbed her tired eyes hoping it would magically rub off the exhaustion out of her brain too. Last lecture of the day and her mind was already fried. College had been a bit more work than she had hoped. The professors had already started dishing out assignments and portions and review materials.

She knew she'd be able to do it all but it would require just a bit more effort. But surprisingly the professors were all pretty good. It wasn't a matter of making a good first impression on the teacher. In college, it was a whole new ball game. You did your work, you got the grades .

Kiera hadn't been good at the first impression thing anyway. In school she had always been rather quiet. The teachers got to know she existed only when they saw the A+ scribbled out on her answer sheets.

The sound of the chair scraping pulled her out of her thoughts. She looked up to see a thin, tiny blonde girl who looked as though she'd barely reach Kiera's shoulder.

“Oh is someone going to sit here?”

Her voice matched her small stature. Soft and just a little squeaky.

“Nope. Go ahead.”

The girl sat down gingerly, as though she was scared that any second now Kiera would snap at her to move. She shifted her bag to cover her lap and tucked a lock of her shoulder length hair behind her ear, all the while looking down.

Kiera looked back at the front of the class, not wanting to make the girl uncomfortable. After a few seconds of awkward silence and a whole lot of shifting desks the girl finally spoke up.

“Hi. I'm Germaine. Germaine Parker. First year, Accountancy. What's your name?”

Kiera turned sharply. Narrowed her eyes. Something was familiar about what the girl had said.

Blonde hair. Accountancy. First year. Parker.

Kiera's wanted to laugh out at the incredulity of it.

This shy, tiny little girl was most probably the Stepford wife's daughter.

“Kiera Watson. Accountancy, first year. You're Nancy Parker's daughter?”

A flush came over the girl's cheeks and she turned her hazel gaze back to her lap, twining her slender fingers furiously. When she looked back up again the flush had increased. Kiera took pity on the girl. She was more hesitant than Kiera was. And there was something to tell about that.

“Um...yes. She told me she spoke to you the other day and she also told me what she said. Look, uh, I’m sorry about that. She didn't mean anything wrong, she thought she was helping. I mean she wasn't really trying to insult you or-” By the time Germaine stopped she'd gone beet root red and her voice had shot up considerably higher on the squeko-meter. If Kiera hadn't been so shy herself she might have laughed at the innocence of Germaine's apologies.
