Chapter 9

Kiera pulled up in front of the pick fence gate of the day care and wondered if she would bump into Alexander. She hoped she didn't. The guy set her off balance and she didn't like that.

Not at all.

Kiera was used to being in control of herself. It unnerved her that Alexander could make her conscious of herself with nothing but one look.

The ever present mess of the front yard brought a faint smile to her lips and she searched for James in the melee of kids running around. She couldn't spot him anywhere in the jumble. Walking into the house, she spotted Sage in the main kitchen area, brewing up herself a cup of coffee.

“Hello Kiera.” Sage said without turning around. Stopping beside her at the counter, Kiera cocked her head to the side.

“How did you know I was here?”

“That's because my mother has eyes at the back of her head. How do you think she runs this zoo?”

Kiera dropped the plastic mug she was fiddling with and nearly jumped six feet in the air. Whirling around she met a pair of lush green eyes. Eyes that could look through a person with cutting intensity. Eyes that made you want to spill all your deep, dark secrets.

As soon as she looked below his neck her eyes bugged out of their sockets and she was positive she was drooling. All over the floor and herself.

Alexander stood at the kitchen door with a hand ruffling his hair, in all his shirtless glory.

With low hanging dark jeans and a Grey T-shirt tucked onto the waist of the jeans, he looked like a carefree don't-give-a-damn guy. Any minute now Kiera was going to snap her jaw shut.

“Hi, Kiera.” Alexander said, with a feral grin on his face. He knew he was attractive and made no bones about it.

Kiera bent down to pick up the fallen mug and couldn't help but notice that even his bare feet were attractive. Long, strong and perfectly arched. She knew she was red in the face. She could feel the blush spreading on her cheeks.

“Alex don't be rude, please put your shirt on.”

Sage's admonishing words didn't do anything to wipe the grin off Alexander's face. He walked towards the counter with a smooth and sure gait that would have intimidated a lesser woman. When he walked, every muscle on his chest rippled. The guy had an 8-pack that would give Mike Tyson's a run for his money. Till now, whenever she had observed him, he never lost that...animal thing about him.

Like a controlled beast.

Kiera didn't like beasts. But instead of an expected fear, he instilled a sense of unbidden curiosity in her. She moved back a step instinctively when he got closer to the counter.

He didn't miss the action but didn't call her on it either.

He turned to Sage and fiddled with a strand of her brown hair. “Come on mom, I just came back from a run. Make me a cup of coffee? Please? I love you?”

Kiera looked at the fluid muscles of his back and all she could think about was how it would feel to run her hands up that wall of strength. Broad shoulders, tapered waist, Banded arms. He wasn't built like a body builder. No, he was more like a sleek assassin. Silent, predatory, dangerous.
