I woke up in the middle of the night sobbing. The autopsy was haunting me. I stood up and put on a sweater. I wiped my eyes so I looked presentable.
I knocked on Ansel's door. It was a few minutes before he opened the door. I went in uninvited.
"She was a Visitor, right?" I asked panicked.
It took Ansel a moment to understand what I was talking about. "Yea," His voice was filled with sleep. "Nothing about her anatomy was human."
I relaxed a little. I sat down and put my head in my hands. Ansel sat next to me and patted my back. "I can't do this anymore." I whispered. "I'm so sick of death."
"I know." Ansel said quietly. "But this won't be forever."
I looked at him. "It's been a year since they arrived. Five months since we've been trapped inside these walls. And we still know nothing about them." I said. "We only know that they're not human."
Ansel sighed. "I can't do any tests when they're dead."
I looked at him and swallowed hard. "Are you really suggesting what I think you are?"
He looked away but nodded slightly. "I already talked to the Senate. The party's heading out tomorrow morning."
I only looked at him.
"You should go back to sleep. They're most likely going to choose you for the expedition."
I stood up quickly and went to the door. I paused. "What happened, Ansel?" My voice was quiet. "You were always against torture."
"We need answers, Val, so that we aren't in here forever."
I shook my head and left the room. I couldn't believe that this was his idea.
