I sat at role call the next morning in silence. Ren sat next to me at one moment, but I stayed silent. I was waiting for the announcement.
I was listening to the list carefully. "Valentina Grey." The commander called. I closed my eyes. I didn't want to be a part of it, but I couldn't go against my commanding officer. I stood and joined the others in the back of the room.
"Ren Takara."
I was surprised. I didn't think that novices would be chosen, but Ren was a fast learner.
"Raphael Garza."
I swallowed. The expedition just got a lot more dangerous for everyone.
The rest of the names were called, and we were dismissed to the weapons bay. We were all given a primary weapon of our choice. I chose the bow, like always. We were also given tranquilizer guns. I put it in my belt.
I didn't like guns anymore.
I was gathering supplies at a table when Raph came up behind me. He pushed against me. I turned and pushed him away. He stumbled back. I turned on my hardware and analyzed him. His heart rate was elevated. He was turned on.
"Stay the fuck away from me." I said evenly.
Raph narrowed his eyes. He came closer to me. "You don't belong here, Val." He almost growled it. "Look around, you're the only woman on this mission. You're only here so there are no ethics violations."
I rolled my eyes. "I'm on this mission because I am one of the most well-trained soldiers that we have. I was at war far longer than you, Raph. I have more experience than anyone in this group."
Raph went to say something, but the commander interrupted. "Let's move out. We want to be back by sundown."
Raph cracked his neck and walked away, leaving me alone.
