Chapter twelve

(Jonah)

"I'll pick you up before diner." Mom shouted from the car.

I nodded and waved. Today was my last day in town, after diner we were driving back home. For the rest of the day, I was going to be at Penny's, which was where I was just dropped off to.

A few seconds after I knocked on the door, Penny was standing in the doorway. "Hi." she said and gave me a hug. Unlike Jazmine, it wasn't a giant bear hug, just a small one.

"Hey." I said and walked into Penny's house. I use to spend a lot of time here, but it has been a while. I stopped to say hello to her mom, then we both went to her basement.

"So," Penny said flicking on Netflix. 'How are your parents doing?"

"A little bit down since Eve moved to Edmonton." I told her.

"Yeah, my aunt had been the same way since my cousin moved out." she said. "It's crazy, she's been wanting me to come over almost everyday."

Penny and I started dating six months before my family and I moved. For the longest amount of time, we had managed to make the distance work. It had only been in the last few months things had taken a downward spiral. Hopefully today would put us back on tract.

"Empty nest syndrome can be deadly." I said. "At least my parents have another eight years before theirs is completely empty."

"It's freaky thinking that Daisy will be graduating in only eight years."

'That's kind of a long time."

"Time flys." Penny smiled and started searching through movies.

Penny had always been pretty. That wasn't my priority, but it was the truth. Her hair was a giant pile of curls, that she always complained about. She was also part Cuban, so she didn't have the deathly pale look of most people here.

"So did I tell you about the new French teacher this year?" Penny asked while looking through some movies.

'I don't believe you did."

"She is just awful." Penny went on. 'She won't even let us call home if we get sick unless we ask in French."

She then went on a long rant about how school was unfair. I told her a bit about how my first couple weeks of school went, but there wasn't really much to tell. I left out the events at the movie theatre, because Penny didn't like Natalie, and I did not want to start a fight. I also left out everything about Mary. Penny would just assume the worst, and this weekend was about us getting everything back on track.

"I can't wait to graduate and never step foot in a high school again." Penny said.

"They say high school is the best time of a persons life."

"Well whoever this 'they' is, they're very wrong."

"I think they may have a point." I said. "You're young, don't have to worry about paying bills or having a job."

"Easy for you to say." Penny scoffed at me. "You do well in school, i'm lucky o get above a sixty."

"You'll change your mind in a few years."

"Doubt it." she sighed. "So anything interesting happening at home?"

"Not really." Lie. Truthfully there was a lot going on. New friend, I was in a fight and probably had a psycho football player out to get me. There was a lot I could tell Penny that would be interesting. But I would cause drama and make her worried. I just really wasn't in the mood to deal with that.
