Chapter 5

A few songs later, Felicity and I were having a great time. They played songs by bands I had heard of thanks to my mom's obsession with them, and apparently Felicity's too. Suddenly a song came on that changed my life. It was a duet between NewSong and Francesca Battistelli, called "The Way You Smile":

"I love the look on your face when you first see me,

The way that you laugh at the silliest things.

I love the way that you love so unselfishly,

You bring out the best in everything.

There's a million more, these are just a few

Of the many reasons I love you.

But there's something about the way you smile,

I can see forever in your eyes,

Telling me I'm yours and you are mine.

The way that you smile.

We're like two lovers in a sweet romance.

You're my leading lady and I'm your man.

You can say I love you in just one glance,

The way you smile,

The way you smile,

The way you smile.

The way you open the door you always see about me,

Treat me like I'm a princess boy you're so sweet.

Love the way that I feel when I'm in your arms,

You whisper "You're beautiful" so safe and warm.

There's a million more, these are just a few

Of the many reasons I love you.

But there's something about the way you smile,

I can see forever in your eyes,

Telling me I'm yours and you're all mine.

The way that you smile.

We're like two lovers in sweet romance.

I'm your leading lady and you're man.

You can say I love you with just a glance,

The way you smile,

The way you smile,

The way you smile.

Today's the first day of me and you,

Where ever you go I'll be there too.

If God be for us, who can be against us,

Who can be against us?

But there's something about the way you smile,

I can see forever in your eyes,

Telling me I'm yours and you're all mine.

The way that you smile.

We're like two lovers in a sweet romance.

You're my leading lady and you're my man.

You can say I love you with just a glance,

The way you smile,

The way you smile,

The way you smile.

Today's the first day of me and you.

Wherever you go I'll be there too.

The way you smile.

Oh I love the way you smile,

The way you smile."

When the song ended, I leaned down and kissed her. She kissed me back, but sharply pulled away when she realized what she was doing, and ran out the front doors. "Felicity!" I called after her. I ran after her, but I was stopped by a few guys at the front door who must have thought I was nothing but trouble. I tried explaining the situation to them, and they finally understood...ten minutes later. It was far too late to go chase after her by then.

I went to my own dorm feeling rejection. Did she ever want to see me again? I didn't have a clue what was going on. When I woke up the next morning I still didn't understand anything. I had this strong feeling that told me I needed to go talk to her though. I argued against it, saying that there was a reason she ran from me, and that it probably wasn't one I wanted to hear, but the urge persisted until finally I gave in.

I had the short walk between my dorm and hers memorized by this time, and I could have gotten there in my sleep. It was good my feet knew where I was going, because my head was too busy trying to figure out what to say to her. I stood outside for the longest time, not doing anything because I couldn't decide what to say. I finally just knocked on the door, thinking the words would just come to me. It didn't take long for it to open.

"Oliver! What are you doing here?" Felicity asked.

"I had this strong urge that told me I had to come talk to you," I said.

"You heard God's voice?" she asked. She was excited, more so than I'd ever seen her, except maybe when she was talking about her longing to be a martyr.

"It was just my gut," I said, playing it off, once I got over the shock of her words. They stunned me and it was hard to think of something to say to that.

"It wasn't," she said. "But I suppose I owe you a bit of an explanation for last night, don't I?"

"Yeah, just a little."

"That was my first kiss," she said, "and you stole it from me."

"But...I really like you," was all I could say.

She smiled. "I really like you too. But I was saving that kiss for my wedding day. I ran off because I was upset about that, but at the same time I wanted you to kiss me again." She whispered the last part of the sentence.

I didn't know what to say. "I'm sorry?" I said. It sounded like a question.

"Don't be."

"So now what?" I asked.

"I suppose it would be okay if you kissed me again, since the first one is already gone."

"Oh, really?" I grinned at her, and did what she asked.
