There were only eight other lost boys besides the three of us, we were brutally outnumbered. We all huddled around a table as Felix marked a map. He explained as he went,
"Okay, here's the plan. Jacob never leaves camp, so over the course of two weeks we kidnap his workers that are coming back and forth, collecting fairy dust. Nobody is to get within twenty feet of their camp, got it? Once his numbers have lowered, we bust in there and try to defeat him."
"And just how do we do that?" I asked.
"Well, you and Pan are the only ones with magic so you're our main players here. I would think that the magic of two people would be enough, but after sucking up all that fairy dust...I don't know."
"So...it's kind of a fifty-fifty shot here?" I asked worriedly.
"I would say that at most. But maybe, if we just sent you in..."
"No." Pan budded in.
"That's what I thought. Okay, plan starts tomorrow so get some shut eye, all of you," Felix said getting up from the table and going to his tent.
I looked over at Pan and said,
"You know, it really would be better if I just went..."
He looked up at the night sky and took a deep breath, then stared into the campfire,
"I know that. But do you know what it would be like if something happened to you? It would be like the earth trying to live without the sun."
I sighed and said,
"Yeah, it happened to me twice."
He was now staring deep into my eyes, the glow of the fire reflecting off his loving eyes,
"Then you know why I don't want you to do this."
I was quiet now, and couldn't get any words up from the back of my throat. I just silently nodded as he looked at me with the most fearful expression I've ever seen. I loathed the fear on his face. I couldn't bear seeing him so scared...it turned him into someone I didn't even know.
He noticed my uncertainty his fear had brought, and smiled to reassure me.
"Care to dance?" He asked as he stood up and held out his hand.
I uncontrollably smiled as I stood up and he pulled me toward him. Something was off though. When I finally put my finger on it I asked,
"Pan, are you...taller?"
He leveled his hand above my head and his. It was only by a couple of inches, but it was a significant change for him.
He said,
"I guess so."
"Doesn't that mean you're aging?"
"Yes."
"You...don't care?"
He shrugged his shoulders,
"If I'm aging with you...then no."
I smiled and rested my chin on his shoulder as we continued to dance...
