Chapter 8 - Too many questions

"Do you have a shinking spell or something? You can shrink the books and carry them around while you're on my shoulder. As for the Princess, I have no clue." We were currently discussing on how we will go to the Travelling River with all of our possessions.

"I have a shrinking spell! How about, I shrink the books and Princess Veronica, we rip off some of your clothing  so we can put the books in there and tie it up.

Since Veronica has a fever, she needs a proper resting place. We are going to use a bit of her silk for a blanket and a pillow for her. The problem is, I have this big feeling that if she goes on your shoulder, she'll roll off. Where do we put her?" We heard Veronica moan in pain and whimper.

"What's the safest route to the river?" I asked her. She thought for a good long while before saying, "The Travelling River doesn't stay in one place. It moves from forest to forest. Tomorrow, I think it will be 5 miles from here? We have been monitoring where the river moves to. Its water is known for its healing. If you drink water from the river, you're wounds, aches, sicknesses, etcetera will disappear in a matter of seconds--"

I have one more day. Tomorrow is my last. If I don't get my kiss by the time the sun's last light sets, I'll be stuck looking like this forever. It took me 2 months and a few weeks just to find a woman who wouldn't be able to escape my clutches. It just so happens that she almost dies and it takes me a while to get her out, and when she did, I looked at her it was my Nica.

"--Hey! Are you even listening to me? Hello?" She waved her tiny fingers at my face. "Sorry, what was that?"

"How much time do you have left before your curse takes over? Actually, you know what? I never understood what curse you have."

"A witch thought that my good looks were annoying because people called her son ugly. She said that I should feel what her son felt before he killed himself. I went to the castle and tried to tell them it was me but they only shunned me out. No one helped me because I looked like an ogre. My parents love me dearly. They'd go insane if they couldn't find me. They'd send a lot of people to find me. They would completely forget their duties in the kingdom, which means that if I don't return soon, my kingdom will fall."

"I see. You are the reason that your parents are sane." She said, understanding why I needed to remove this curse. "What's your story? How do you know Nica?" She asked me curiously.

"You sure do ask a lot of questions, don't you Corona? The answer to that will have to wait for another time. How about you grow bigger and carry the books while I carry Veronica. I mean, it's your books isn't it?" I suggested, hoping that she would finally agree. She sighed sadly and said, "Do I have to?" I nodded, answering her question. Whining, she agreed.

I carried Nica bridal style and she snuggled close to me. She was beautiful. And hot. So very hot. "Corona, she's burning up." I said, slowly sitting down with her in my lap. "Burning up? That's not good. If it's serious, it might take longer for her to heal." I frowned as I took in the sudden information. It took me a good long minute to recollect. "Well then, we should hurry to the river. That way, we can heal her using the river." Her eyes widen in shock. "Caspian, I remembered something extremely important."

"Is it good or bad?" I asked slowly, hoping it was good news. "It's bad. The river always finds a way to balance it out. If you were to heal Nica, you'd be having the fever. If you were to break the curse, Nica would have the curse. If you take Serendipity flowers, you have to trade jewels or crystals for it." She said worriedly. My hope vanished. "No." I said. "Is there a loophole? Is there any other way?" I asked. She shook her head. "It's the only way." She said in a whisper.

No! I couldn't bare the thought of Nica suffering because of this horrid curse. Corona's eyes widened as she seemed to realize something. "I have a way, but you will have to trust me on this. I cannot tell you my way." I sighed at what she told me, but nodded understandingly.

She flipped through the pages of one of her books and once she found the right one, she stopped and read it carefully.

She then started chanting in her native language, growing by the second. When she was finished, she was as tall as me. I got up from the ground. A sudden snap of a twig was heard. We became alert of our surroundings.

A brown jackrabbit hopped past us as we sighed in relief. At that moment, my stomach growled. "You haven't eaten in a while." Corona notices. She looked up at the sky and flies to one of the trees. Picking two crystal apple from a tree, she tosses one to me and munches on the other one.

"Can't have the prince starve to death, that would cause too much ruckus for my liking. Let's get going after you finish eating." She put her books in a pile and sat down.
