Can’t Spell Love Without L: Christmas Special

[Act 3 - Page 5]

December 24.

"That relative of yours... is Amane Misa."

--

Amaryllis was still in shock of the revelation that L had told her. She was numb after hearing that Amane was a relative of hers, and is currently in a desperate mood to kill her.

--

"H-How did that happen?!! We're not even sharing the same family name!"

"Yes, I do know that Layfield is not her surname, but after your grandfather died, she was adopted by several couples, until she finally ended up finding her aunt, Mrs. Carmine Amane. Soon after, she inherited her aunt's last name, and used her physical appearance to be a top model in Japan. This also served as a good cover for her, because she had been waiting for the inheritor to be unveiled."

"...Why?"

"The murder is supposed to be a string of family deaths, but since Misa's surname is different, it turned out to be a confusing puzzle for the police."

They were both silent for a moment, and finally, L spoke again.

"Do you wish to review this case?  I have acquired all of the information needed. We just need to wait for the killer to strike again."

Amaryllis nodded and sat beside him to take a good look at the laptop monitor. She only scrolled once, but when she saw the gruesome photos of her distant relatives' bodies during the autopsy, she quickly walked away and stood in front of an open window, trying hard not to throw up. Tears welled up in her eyes; she's the reason why those innocent people are murdered mercilessly. Her shoulders shook slightly and her eyes betrayed her, letting the salty droplets escape.

L was worried. He shouldn't have made her review the files he obtained. With care, he hopped off his chair and stood behind Amaryllis, his arms snaking around her lithe frame while he rest his head on her shoulder. She was trembling, and L wanted to make the fear go away.

"I will protect you. I won't let anyone hurt you, not only because of my promise to your grandfather, but because I care for you and your safety."

He hugged her gently and hushed softly, her anxiety slowly fading as the sun bathed them with warm, golden light.

--

It was dinner time already, and L asked her if she had regained her appetite back. She smiled sweetly and clung in his arm.

When they arrived at the dining room, Matt let out a wolf whistle, which earned him a glare from L. The red head grinned at them, and proceed to sit down at his usual chair.

"Sooner or later, the children will be arriving." Watari said softly, and gestured the other room. "You may have your dinner here." He continued with a smile.

L nodded in return and the two of them went inside and closed the door.

--

Amaryllis was speechless when she saw the scene that the open window portrays.

Tangerine leaves danced in the night air, together with white petals that flew from the sturdy trees of Wammy's House. Voices of small children can be heard from the huge green garden, their laughter echoing softly. The gentle wind blew and waltzed with the white curtains that covered the ebony window frames, while the full moon gazed at them, the bright light coating the said orphanage. Her breath was taken away, and her heart hammered in her chest wildly. It frenzied even more when L carefully lifted her hand and kissed the back of her palm. A gasp escaped her lips which made the detective smile.
