Chapter Fifteen

The library was dusty and old, but that didn't stop her from reading book after book.

"You seem happier." She looked to jack, pouting as his gaze remained on the books before them.

"Did I look unhappy?"

"No," he said flatly, turning the page.

"Lately you've just been...very distant."

She pulled the hoodie over her hands, scared the bruises will show.

"I'm fine." Jack watched as she pulled out a book.

"Read this to me."

"Her laugh was as bitter as the alcohol, smile wretched as if soaked in water then left to dry. Her lips were stained red from the abuse of lipstick, a light circle left in the middle as she took another swig from the bottle.

His cough came up spluttered as the drink burned his throat, wondering how she seemed to down the horrid substance so smoothly.

"Years of practice." The girl slurred when he asked.

Her heels were enormously high, color a sleek black and smooth as velvet to the touch. The dress was short and revealing, chest and legs quite noticeable even in this dim light.

He watched the red of her lips conceal part of a cigarette, staining the end before a lighter flickered on. With a deep breath, the smell of smoke filled the air, and he was more than unhappy as she blew the stuff towards him.

"What's the matter?" She questioned slyly, hopping off the counter and stalking towards him. The sight of his hands quivering and his loss of words caused a rush to flood over her body, the smirk not being contained.

"You don't like the smell?" She asked, putting the cigarette back into her mouth.

His breath shook as she sat on his lap, watching as she inhaled deeply before leaning forward to give him an open mouthed kiss. The smoke left him groggy and dazed, a lazy smile surfacing as she took another drink. The skin shown made him uneasy, staring to long as she began to laugh again."

"Who wrote this?" Jack questioned, turning over the book to read the spine.

"It's a bit wild. I mean I'm all for wild.." Rapunzel blushed as he ran a finger up her thigh.

"But I'd rather do this touchy feely boy girl stuff in person." She looked up at him from her position on the floor, detecting his smirk before saying;

"I like it."

"We'll if you like it maybe we should act this out in person. You know just in case you don't like short dresses."

"Jack," she laughed nervously.

That was all she got out before he there her over his shoulder, laying her down behind piles of books.

"What are you doing." She giggled.

Jack nuzzled closer to her, his nose brushing against hers.

"Nothing." He whispered.

And though she was desperately sad and though he was desperately in love, they kissed. They kissed behind piles of books under layers of dust and as he touched her exposed skin she couldn't help but shiver and sigh at the familiar contact.

"You make me melt." Rapunzel laughed as he spoke.

"You make me..cold."

"Cold?" He smirked.

"I have that effect on people."

"Mhm." She snorted as he began to kiss down her neck, squirming underneath him.

"Say still." He muttered, working down her body.

He lifted the hoodie she borrowed from his, kissing across her stomach. 

"Happy birthday." He smirked.

They wandered around town, Rapunzel awing at all the wonders surrounding her.

She danced and ate and forgot about being sad, fun overcoming everything from the past.

As the music played in town square, Jack watched her spin. Her bare feet skimmed the ground as she danced, hair shining in the afternoon sun. The book she liked was held in his hand, standing and watching the girl he was in love with.

As the sky grew dark, he pulled her away to sit on the sand, night falling as they announced the king and queens arrival.

"This has been the best birthday ever. " she whispered before the first lantern floated into view.

"It's not over yet."
