Cassandra Manning sat in the office of Doctor Derek Shepherd, someone she has known her entire life. He looked at her with sympathy in his eyes and that look alone confirmed that what she thought was something minor, was indeed something far worse.
"Where are your parents, Cass?" he questioned.
"On the road with the band, of course."
"What about Mason?"
"He is in class until three."
"You really shouldn't be alone right now. This is huge news."
"Just tell me Derek." Cassandra pleaded.
"It's bad, Cass. Stage 3, Ovarian cancer."
"And there it is."
"We will fight it. You're young. I'll get you in contact with the best oncologist in the city. I'll call your father tonight and talk to him myself. Tell him that he and Marisol need to catch a flight out tonight."
"Don't worry about it. They'll be home next week." Cassandra looked down and grasped her backpack that sat on the floor.
"Cass, don't shut me or anyone else out."
"I am eighteen. I turned eighteen two weeks ago, Derek. You were there. You want to know what I am feeling right now?"
"Yes."
"God has one sick sense of humor. I have a full ride scholarship to Oxford. I was escaping them. No I'm fucking stuck here like the rest of dumbasses that go to my school." she dropped her bag and dropped to the ground. She looked up at Derek, the tears in her eyes making the guy feel even worse. Then she screamed.
