Chapter 1

I was being shaken and I was starting to get a headache. I kept hearing my name. "Evera! Evera? Evera wake up!" I then felt the tears on my cheeks that were hot and still falling down my face. I opened my eyes and saw that I was in my safe place. I was safe and it was all a dream. Okay it wasn't a dream but a really bad memory that haunted me and would never leave.

I looked around and could feel my heart still beating with the memory. I saw Alex and she looked worried. I took deep breaths to slow my racing heart. I sat up and looked at my room. I wiped the tears on my face away. I looked at the clock on the table beside my bed. It read 3:59-no wait make that 4:00- in the morning. I sighed why did this always happen. I got not only myself awake but the rest of the house at an early time.

"You had that dream again didn't you?" I nodded in response to Alex's question. "Hey don't worry about getting me up this early I'm used to it by now." That was true she had been getting me out of night mares since it happened and it was her mom that took me in since I refused to live with the family I hated and that hated me.

I sighed and rubbed the side of my arms feeling the physical scars I was left with. I smiled a bit trying to lighten my mood and a shook my head a tiny bit. "You shouldn't be used to it. You should be hating my guts for getting you up at four in the morning all the time."

"Yeah I do but then I think about what you might be going through and decide to live with it."

I gave her a big smile and a hug, "Thanks Alex you're a good friend."

"I know, I know." She hugged me back and went to the door. "So shall we get some breakfast since we are fully awake?" I chuckled and followed her down the stairs to the kitchen. Bach came with us. He was a German Shepherd-Pure Bred- and looked the way a German shepherd should look like. I patted his head and he nudged his nose against my leg wanting more attention. I laughed and grabbed a bowl from the cabinet. I poured some strawberry cereal in it and soaked it in milk.

I turned on the TV and blankly watched it. It was on those commercials that lasted for 30 minutes on a product that was over priced and cheap. Alex came over with a plate of leftovers and barely watched the TV also. My phone started to ring with Carrie Underwood. I looked at it and saw it was a text from Derek. It read: Hey are you okay. Did you wake up or am I being stupid? I shook my head and wrote back: Yes I did but I didn't get to the worst part of the dream this time. Alex looked over just as I closed my phone.

"Who was that?" She asked.

"Who else do you think would text me at four in the morning?"

"Derek" She sighed and shook her head. "What was it about today?"

"He wanted to know if I was awake because of the dream."

"Again that's like the, what? 50th time this month and it's only been three weeks into it." We both laughed at that. "Though you have to admit that it is creepy how he seems to know when you have the dream and he lives nowhere near here."

I pondered that for a minute before I replied," Yeah it is weird but maybe he has a soft, sensitive side to him that you don't know about?"

"Yeah Derek having a sensitive side is possible because he did help you cope. But the soft part that is. Oh how do I say this nicely? Not possible."

"He does. He just hates showing it."

"Yeah to everyone but you. You should really ask him out."

"No I shouldn't he would just say no. Besides he's not my type entirely."

"What!? Are you kidding me? You two are so compatible and he likes you. No he loves you. He would do anything for you with a bat of your eyelashes."

I rolled my eyes and was saved from answering her back with another text. Are you sure I can tell when you're lying. I stopped and was trying to come up with a way to sound fine in a text. I'm not lying Alex woke me when the shoots were being heard by everyone. I sat back and pushed the images to the back of my mind where they belonged but never stayed. His text came pretty fast this time. Ok I'll believe you this time but next time that it does get worse call me please. That's what I'm here for. Btw are we all still on for the fair tomorrow. I looked at Alex who was yet again reading the texts. She went back to staring at the TV. Yeah we're still on. I started to think about the fair and how many happy memories I had there with my friends. If I thought of my family those images would come back to me. My phone vibrated with the last and final text. Good. Have a good rest of the morning and have a peaceful sleep tonight. Bye.

Alex sighed and shook her head," I'm telling you he would do anything for you."

"Look I would know if he liked me ok. And I can tell you right now that he does not."

"Evera you would know if I guy liked you for your life." She sighed and hugged me, "I just can't wait till you do realize it but until then you can be the younger sister I wished I had."

"Yeah but that big sister thing you can't hold over my head forever you know."

"No but I can unless you chose to let us adopt you."

"I already told you why. I'll be 18 in a year and a half and 17 very soon. It's nothing against you I just don't want to be that big of a burden on your mom."

"Okay but always know that in life you have somewhere to call home."

I hugged her and let a few tears fall from my face knowing I had a place to call home whenever I needed it. I had a good life and good friends but why did I have to ruin it with what I did when no one was around? Please God help me? I stood and told Alex that I had to go to church and pick up some things today in Denver. She nodded and went to find something interesting on TV.

I took a shower, got some clothes on, brushed my hair and put on some makeup. I got my purse together and made sure I had everything from my IPod to my keys to my cell. I walked down the stairs grabbed my coat and turned to Alex. "Tell your mom I'll be back before dinner and that I have my cell if she needs me. And that I'm taking my car."

"Okay no problem. Do you have your wallet?" I checked my purse and saw that she was right. I ran to her and took it from her. "Your welcome."

"Thank you!" I yelled back to her as I made my way to my car. It was cold like always because of the weird rain we had last night and pretty much the whole summer. I hooked up my IPod and played the music I liked to listen to when I drove. The car finally heated up enough for me and I was off. I took the drive that went through Nederland. It was longer but I liked the time it gave me to think.
