I sat on a stool in Purple Ink, stirring my ginger ale slowly. Ollie, the bartender was cleaning a cup with a rag as he stared at me with a frown.
"Can I ask you a question, Ollie?" I asked as Ollie set down the cup. He had a bald head, but had no shame going out on public with it. It was shiny, like a bowling ball. He had a black goatee that hung a centimeter below his chin. He usually wore a bartender suit, but when he was outside, he wore a black tee, which I found out was the signature uniform of Purple Ink. Ollie had gauges that created big holes in his ears, which I liked to stick my finger in. He said he had other piercings, but I didn't want to know where.
"Dan, if you want advice from a bartender you're clearly on something," Ollie said as I rolled my eyes. "But sure. Ask me anything."
"Have you ever had a girlfriend?" I asked, but Ollie just stared at me.
"Rude. I've had a lot of girlfriends after I graduated." he scoffed.
"College or high school?" I laughed as Ollie flicked my forehead.
"College. I didn't have much free time in High school, but when I graduated college, all of the ladies wanted this." Ollie said smirking slyly. I laughed and sipped my ginger ale. "Why'd you ask? Problems with the man-friend?" Ollie asked arching an eyebrow towards the body art department, which was a sign to me that he was talking about Nick.
"My ex, and Nick isn't my boyfriend. Were just.... close friends, I guess you could say." I said elbowing Ollie in the gut. He chuckled and refilled my drink.
"What'd you say his name was? Jay? What did he do to you?" Ollie asked pulling a strand of hair behind my ear. I felt comfortable with Ollie. Not just Ollie, but everybody who worked at Purple Ink. This was my home and these people were my family.
"Nothing. He just annoys me. He got in a fight with Ash and Jay hasn't come to school. I'm honestly worried for both of them, but Ash...she's won't even text me." I said. I had brought Ashlynn to Purple Ink a couple of times. She got friendly enough with everyone here to remember their names, but she isn't interested in the body art stuff.
"Maybe Ashlynn's having a hard time. She could be falling in love..." Ollie whispered. I rolled my eyes and moved my ginger ale away from the table.
"Ash does not fall in love. Her heart is as hard Xavier's muscles. Its like iron plates." I insisted. Just then, the door to the body art department opened up and a scrawny guy came walking out with tears streaming down his eyes. Nick followed after his with dirtied gloves as he threw them into a nearby trash can sighing heavily.
"A first-timer? How sad..." I said as Nick smiled sweetly.
"Yeah. He was gay so I wanted to do something that represented that, but as soon as I touched him with the needle, he broke. Kind of sad. He was only in middle school, Guess he got bullied..." Nick said scooting into the stool next to me. Ollie handed him a vodka shot with a splash of orange juice.
"Drinking during work? Ooh, badass much?" I nudged Nick in the arm as he grinned.
"I have a very high tolerance to alcohol. Unlike Andy who'll get drunk from the smell of it." Nick said as he slipped the drink down. I smiled dreamily and I watched Nick's adam apple slide up and down.
"You guys seriously haven't hooked up yet?" Ollie asked as the two of us looked at him. I blushed, but I didn't see what Nick's reaction was.
"What are you talking about, Ollie? Nick is..." I said glancing over towards Nick. Obviously my type, but he's not interested in a junior like me. I thought.
"I like Dannie," Nick declared. My thoughts and hearts stopped. "I really do like Dannie and if she would like to, I would like to go out with her." Nick said turning his eyes towards me. I stared at him with glazed eyes. I could hear Ollie smirk and push a button under the counter to call Xavier upstairs. I couldn't look away from Nick. I felt... relieved. Relieved from my past, my parents, Jay. I was falling for him.... or I already had fallen for him.
What's the emergency?" Xavier exclaimed as he jumped down the stairs. Ollie put his finger up to his lips and pointed to Nick and I. Xavier gasped and scooted in next to Ollie as they watched us like a movie. I blushed because of all the attention. "What'd I miss?"
"Nick just asked Dan out."
"Oh my gawd, this should be an opera or something."
I covered my mouth, trying to cover up my quivering lips. I really do like Nick. Not just because of his looks, but he made me...me. When I was with Nick, I forgot what hate meant. All I saw was love.
"Dannie, would you go out with me?" Nick asked me squeezing my hand softly. I felt a tear drip down my cheek. I wiped it away immediately trying to hold my own.
"Okay.... Yeah, I'll go out with you." I said as Nick pulled me in for a tight hug; Ollie and Xavier whistling in the background.
