CHAPTER FOUR
I ran to the front desk at the hospital, pulling Jake along with me by his hand.
"I'm looking for Anne Bradley." I told the receptionist, slightly out of breath.
"And you are?" she asked rudely.
"Alexis Bradley, her daughter."
"I'm going to need some identification." she told me, pushing her glasses up her nose."Here's the thing lady, my mother has been in a serious accident, and I was called by a lady named Sarah, as I am her daughter, and the closest living relative in this state. Only for you to say I need some bloody identification. That was the last thing on my mind when I was rushing down here!" I spoke through clenched teeth.
"Well I'm sorry, but you need identification." she replied, as she typed something into her computer.
"I'll be back," I told her, sending her a glare as I picked Jake up, placing him on my hip so I could run faster, and ran back outside to my car, unlocking it, I quickly opened the door, and grabbed my wallet, before re-locking it. I then ran back inside.
"Here," I said, handing her my driver's license.
"Okay, I've unlocked the doors to the left of the desk, go through them, and follow the hall all the way to the elevators, and then go to the third floor, and its room 13 in the intensive care unit." She told me, as she continued to type something into the computer in front of her.
Finally...
"You must be Alexis," A man in dark blue scrubs, approached me as Jake and I left the elevator.
"Yes, where's my mum?" I asked, getting straight to the point.
"She's right through that door," he said, pointing to a door, across the hall.
"But I must warn you, she isn't in a good condition." he told me seriously.
"What do you mean?" I asked, nervously.
"Does your mother have any relatives who are able to make any medical decisions for her?" He asked me, avoiding the question.
"My aunt Grace or my Aunt Lilly" I told him.
"Could you please write their names and phone numbers down on this for me?" he asked me, as he held out a clipboard.
I took it from him, wrote their details down, before handing it back to him. "Could you please tell me what happened?" I pleaded, scared.
"An intoxicated driver didn't give way as your mother was going around the big roundabout in the city center, the passengers side of your mother's car was hit, causing her car to be pushed into the tree in the middle of the roundabout. She's in critical condition, and we've put her into a medical coma... There's not much we can do, other than monitor her, watch for any changes, and keep her as comfortable as possible until then." He told me, as he rubbed the back of his neck.
I stood frozen, as the information sunk in.
I took a deep breath, before pushing open the door to my mothers hospital room, the sound of beeps was the only thing I could hear as I looked at my mothers peaceful face, although it was covered in scratches, and half her head was wrapped in a bandage, she still looked beautiful.
"Mummy..." Jake said, as he ran over to her bed, taking her hand.
I walked to her other side and held her other hand softly in both of mine.
"Please get better mum, we need you." I whispered, as tears streamed down my face.
For the next few weeks, Jake and I stayed in my room, hiding from the world.
