There was a light knock on my door before it swung open. Gabriel had returned, this time instead of carrying a gun he had two environmentally friendly bags in his hand. It was an unexpected surprise. How long had he been gone, surely no more than an hour or so? I glanced at the clock, it was mid-morning and I hadn't even noticed.
"I am sorry for barging in earlier and for seeming rude." He placed the bag onto the bed, taking off his leather jacket. I glanced at him in shock, was this guy even the same one? He looked different, less biker warlord and more like, well an ok guy. I still wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley but if we crossed paths in the street, I wouldn't cross the road to avoid him.
"Umm, excuse me?" I asked.
"I think we started off on the wrong foot. Whether we like it or not we are going to be stuck together for a while and I know this isn't easy for you. So I am trying to start again."
"I'm sorry for being difficult then, even if you deserved it."
He stared at me before shrugging. "Maybe, though you are one difficult girl to deal with. Do you normally have issues following directions?"
I swung around the seat I was on and glared at him. "Really, you think I have issues following directions...Did it ever occur to you that maybe with everything I've been though I would have been more cooperative if you had brought me a coffee and less attitude rather than a gun and barking orders."
"I don't bark orders." He huffed pulling from the bag some Ramen Noodles. "Sorry, I got to stretch the money for a while." There was a coffee maker and a microwave in the room, along with two bowls, two plates and some cutlery.
"It's fine."
He poured hot water on the noodles. "Watch these I have a few more things to bring inside."
Gabriel walked back in carrying another three full bags, looking like they had come from Wal-Mart. I wondered if this was his normal look or more something he had done because he had gone shopping. I picked up two forks and the bowls taking them over to the little table I had been sitting at.
"I got you a few things." He placed the bags onto the bed.
"Tell me you have some clothes and at least a toothbrush and I'll consider you forgiven for firing the gun at me earlier," I said as I dived into the bowl of noodles. They had that standard chicken cardboard flavor and texture I wasn't really used. I had only ever eaten these maybe two, three times before. I frowned, turning my head towards where Gabriel was seated. He was eating while reading my notes on the pad that I had jotted down before he interrupted. A sudden rush of panic flooded my system as I tried to stop him. Gabriel stood, continuing to read. His lip curled as he tossed the pad back down onto the table.
"What's that about?" he hissed turning the full force of his killer glare onto me. Shuddering, I backed away, wondering where his new beginning had gone. Gabriel followed backing me into a corner. He was once more just a fierce killer. Ice cold blue eyes searching for answers, none of which I was willing to share.
"Lilly" he paused. "I'm asking you, nicely. What was that about? Are you thinking of tracking down Cayn because you can't...do you understand me, you can't take him on."
"Why do you care? You have no idea what he did to me, I am owed my revenge."
"Because you can't win against him."
I could hear the tension in his voice. "You don't know that." I forced myself to look into his eyes "And you don't know me."
His fist pounded the wall leaving a hole. "I know more than you do my dear." He hissed. "You're the one that doesn't understand. Cayn is one of the originals...that makes him powerful, very powerful. Only a few originals still live and they stick close together when they are on Earth. You won't be able to kill him Lilly. He will use you and then kill you, like you mean nothing. Don't be fooled into thinking anything else Lilly, he is a master manipulator and no matter what he tells you, he can't ever love you." His eyes softening as he spoke.
