We arrived at the hospital and Mike checked me in. Our waiting time was a reasonable four hours and I was glad Mike had taken care of my health insurance when I had begun work. I stripped off my clothes and waited for the doctor as Mike stayed in the waiting area. A man in his thirties walked in holding a clipboard.

"Hello, Ms. Vale, I'm Dr. Brown the on-call OBGYN, I'll be checking you over today. Now, it states here that you took a nasty fall at work and then became dizzy afterward; is that correct?"

"Yes but I feel fine, really."

"I understand that, but better to be safe than sorry. Now have you had any cramping, pain or spotting?"

"No, none of that," I answered, wishing I could kill Mike for being so damn overprotective.

"Ok well, I'd like to do an ultrasound anyway, just to make sure everything is alright. Would that be ok?"

I groaned, "Sure, knock yourself out."

"Excellent, now I need you to shuffle down and let your knees fall to the side, like when you have a pap smear. I'll go get the machine and a nurse."

I watched as he walked out the door, too shocked to say anything. What the hell was he going to do to me? I had watched movies, seen TV shows and when the ladies were getting ultrasounds none of them looked like how I was going to look. He walked in with a nurse pushing along some computer looking thing and smiled at me.

"Now if you feel any discomfort just let us know."

"Ok," I said hesitantly as he pulled out a long probe looking thingy and rolled a condom over it. I gulped not liking at all where this was going.

"Ok, now Ms. Vale we need you to relax"

"Thank you, now let me have it so we can get a good view of your little guy. Now it's still early days, but there should be a heartbeat." The doctor said as he moved the probe around. He pressed a button and suddenly the room was filled with this crazy sound like a crazy fast beating drum and washing machine were smashed together. "Yep there it is, nice and strong," he said, and for the first time, I took a look at the screen.

"Ok, so here is the heart." An arrow appeared on the monitor and I watched in amazement. "Everything is looking perfect."

"That's my baby?" I asked watching that tiny speckled flicker on the screen. "Yes Ms. Vale, that's it."

"Wow," I breathed.

Mike was still waiting when I walked out of the hospital, he held out a bag of crisps which I gladly took. There was also a can of soda in his other hand. I was guessing they were some kind of peace offering or something to make up for the fact that I had had to go through all of that. I wasn't as mad with him, but still, he didn't need to know that just yet.

"So everything is fine?" he asked once we were back in the car.

"The Doctor told me that everything was perfect," I answered taking another sip of the grape soda.

"Well, I'm glad to hear that Lilly, you had me worried."

"I know, I also owe you some kind of punishment for making me go through all that for nothing. Did you know they gave me an ultrasound...and not like those you see in movies either?"

Mike gave a small chuckle until I punched him. "That isn't funny. It was embarrassing and gross." I told him feeling rather angry.

"Lilly, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh."

"So you should be sorry, I felt like a child in there."

"Did you get to see the baby though?" he asked changing the subject quickly.
My heart leaped with joy at the thought of watching that tiny little heartbeat thumping away like a hummingbird.
