The city was quiet, somewhat calm tonight. I sat quietly in the car listening to the police sirens in the distance, silently laughing at the irony of it all. How did this happen? One can only wonder how a once dedicated young detective would eventually come to be on the opposite end of a police chase.
~~ flashback ~~
I panted as I hid behind a wall, pressing my back against it trying to catch my breath. I knew what was waiting for me just around the corner. I've got him trapped. It's a dead end, meaning there is no escape for him. I tightened my grip on my gun as I prepared to come face to face with him for the first time. This is it.
I turned my face and attempted to sneak a glance, but smoke filled the narrow alley, making everything barely visible. I followed the sound of his bone-chilling laughter. I was about to become the youngest, first female detective to bring in the city's most sought-after criminal - the Joker.
Silence. His daunting laughter came to an abrupt stop. I push my body off the wall and spin around the corner, holding my gun out with both hands. As I cautiously approach, the loud pounding of my heart was almost deafening. I slowly close in on him. There's no escaping this time.
Amidst the clearing smoke, lay a single rose on the ground. There was no sign of the Joker.
"Damn it!" I cursed under my breath. How could he have possibly gotten away this time? And the events of that day soon lead me down the dangerous path of a cat-and-mouse game with the most notorious criminal in Gotham City.

Perhaps everything would be different if I had never followed him into the alley that day. Perhaps my life would still be normal.
I gave up everything I stood for; my identity, my dignity, and what for? Only to be known as the Joker's precious lady, the new Queen of Gotham City?
I didn't choose this.
